Just looking around at Knifehog and I noticed that they list the Manix 2 as S30V. Is this just a typo on their part or has the Manix 2 been switched to S30V?

If they make it standard with S30V and FFG, i *might* buy another one, if i can get past the weight and in-pocket width.

I don't know if FFG would make the cut, ER "grind" :) .

Personally I miss the lack of grind lines these days.

Thus far we know the Manix made February this year still uses 154CM. Because that is my date code on my Manix.

There is nothing wrong with 154cm IMO. I have used it for some time in my Griptilian and been using my Manix (long term review still in process) for some time. If you maintain your edge it does not matter what steel you use IMO. I realised this recently and here is a great video about it. The change over to S30V will be a rollover change as far as I know.

It just depends on how regularly you maintain your edge. My problem with 154cm was i thought it felt "gummy"...that's the best way i can describe it. When i sharpened it, it was like i could feel how soft it was, and i've never worked with a steel that burred up as bad and as easily. Then it just didn't hold an edge long enough for my liking...maybe i got a bad blade or something but the edge retention was far less than the VG10 Delica i had right before it.

Are you noticing this softness in 154cm in general or is there a particular maker/brand who is putting out soft 154cm.

I have very little experience with this steel, the only knife i can really go on was the Manix 2 i had, as previous knives i just didn't know enough about knives or steel to think this far into it, and back then 154cm was probably among the higher end steels anyway.

154cm is known for the burr it gets. I think I saw that it would offer 40% more edge holding than 8Cr13 and the white papers make it look like it isn't tough. In my use, it seemed like an okay steel, not difficult to get very sharp and it held an edge reasonably.

Either steel is a moot point for me, but I'm thinking it has to do with simplifying operations. The production Manix 2 was the only model at Golden using 154cm. I would love to try some CPM 154 or FFG 154cm < maybe we could roll the FRCP Manix to it.

Back after the 2012 product guide was released, Eric said that they found out they could offer the Manix 2 in S30V for approximately the same price, so they went for the switch to give the user a better product.

I have not seen any "in the wild" pictures of a S30V Production Manix 2, and I've been watching.

Hmm, just received a Manix 2 in a trade, hopefully I'll have better luck with the 154cm than you did.

Depends on the person and what they use their knife for in the end.

If one really doesn't do much cutting with their knives or really uses them much if any at all then it likely wouldn't matter too much.

For some of us who do really use our knives at work and don't have the time to sharpen them 3 or 4 times a day if not more the steel does really matter. Yes, we can tell the difference because there is a difference and the more you sharpen a blade the faster it will wear out.

One doesn't add metal to a blade when sharpening it. :)

So to say that the steel doesn't matter is preposterous.

I did not say steel does not matter for everyone. Everyone has an opinion. I posted my opinion on the matter after my use at work and you can see some of the use in the link in my signature for what ever it may be worth :)

Still does not mean given the option I would take RWL-34 or M4 as my preferred preference. But, there is nothing wrong with 154CM when done right and my experience with it has been good in my small data point.

Manix 2 XL, S30V FFG. Clip off, lanyard on, problem solved.
