MT12 Cruwear hardness test results
MT12 Cruwear hardness test results
I posted this in the MT12 re-release thread, but I figured that inquiring minds wanted to know.
I no longer work where I have a hardness tester in the next lab, but I left on very good terms and I stopped in to test my Cruwear mule this evening. I checked calibration before testing and I like the results. Please keep in mind, these were 3 tests on a single Mule. But I like the direction they point.
In case my writing is illegible, the numbers are 62.1, 62.2 and 62.8 HRC.

Thanks, I feel even better about the two I ordered.
Our reason is quite satisfied, in 999 cases out of every 1000 of us, if we can find a few arguments that will do to recite in case our credulity is criticized by someone else. Our faith is faith in someone else's faith, and in the greatest matters this is most the case.

I don't have any numbers, but I agree that it would've been interesting. Normally I'm right on top of the Mules and order one the first day, but I slacked off just long enough last fall that they were being recalled two days before I tried to order.cckw wrote:Did anyone do a test on the bad ones? would be a fun fact
I didn't slack off this time. Got my order in about 9:03 am on Friday.

The numbers couldn't be better for a knife with this steel going for toughness AND wear resistance. Beautiful! It can take higher numbers but it loses some of the toughness it's known for while gaining very little actual wear resistance. Just right Sal. Thanks again!

UPS just dropped off my MT12P mule today and I was so excited to open it. I noticed the same "spots" the were mentioned in a previous post (jackthedog). I wiped off the oil that was on the blade and the spost were still there. I don't know if this is a side effect of the second heat treat to make them the proper hardness or what. I am not saying I have a SERIOUS problem with it, however I would love Sal's take on this or even some other forum members. See pic.

I was pretty confident they'd do a great job on the heat treat. I've been in meetings where we discover that a mistake was made in manufacturing and I can only imagine what it was like there. I think we can see that Spyderco did everything they could to make their customers happy with the product. They released them at the same price too. That's the company that I know and love. It makes it easier to spend money when you like who it's going to!The Mastiff wrote:The numbers couldn't be better for a knife with this steel going for toughness AND wear resistance. Beautiful! Joe
This forum is a great resource and I like to give back a little when I can. I normally just browse and don't say much.2cha wrote:Thanks JLS for the effort and especially the sharing!!
I didn't notice it on the one I tested last night, but I really didn't look that hard either. I pulled it out, wiped off the oil with some acetone and tested it. The other still hasn't left it's box, but I'll check later tonight.xceptnl wrote:I noticed the same "spots" the were mentioned in a previous post (jackthedog). Mine arrived today, no speckling at all. Looked under magnification and noticed you can see the original "Spyderco" "Cruwear" under the new Cruwear. Don't know what they did to the blades, maybe a stonewash? I say this because mine arrived with a small "stone" in one of the tang holes. :)
