New Superleaf - Issue / Need Input Please

#1

Post by Brad3529 »

Hi All- New to forum and Spyderco. Just purchased a new Superleaf from Amazon and need your input please.

Attached is a picture of the blade. It is a bit discolored near the edge and is very noticeable ( dark Grey ). Is this a polishing issue? Defect? There is a "black" spot near the tip on the bottom left edge of the picture but that is a reflection.

I contacted CS and they advised to send it in for warranty as pics are hard to tell. I would but this is a new knife with no usage what so ever and I can send it back to Amazon under their return policy.

I want to make sure it isn't some sort of heat treatment issue and that portion of the blade got too hot or something - making it brittle / etc.

Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you.

That's weird, I've never seen that before. Sorry bro, I'd send it back to get as new one!

It might have been a return to the original seller - or it might have been a display piece. Hard to tell the provenience of a knife some times. If it makes you uncomfortable, I'd just return it to Golden for a look-see.

Otherwise, you could put a bit of metal polish on it to see if the discoloration comes off...

I would return it and buy one from someone like Jeff at CS. Or rub a little metal polish on it and call it good.

I've had VG-10 discolor like that. I bet someone got the knife from Amazon, cut something acidic and then decided they didn't want the knife. If it were me I'd see if I could clean off the stain first.

In my experience, VG-10 is often uneven in color, regardless of whether or not it's been used. I would hardly consider it an imperfection, much less a defect but, as with most things in life, opinions will vary.

Yup, my Rock Lobster has a similar shadow on the blade.

Welcome Brad :) You will get some thoughtful advice here, good folks :) Enjoy the forum.

If the patina bothers you return it to Amazon. All blade materials (except H1) will patina if used and some even come that way. This is something that happens when Carbon and Iron are mixed in a brew with other alloying elements. especially if the blade is used and not scrupulously cared for. Several of my knives have deleloped some patina (Fe3O4). The alarm bells should go off when you see rust (Fe2O3) on vg-10.

Whatever works best for your piece of mind and the use you intend for the blade :)

That's odd. I would send it in to Golden & see what they say.
