Long delayed praise for my Calypso Jr.!

#1

Post by Xibalba »

Hi, all! I've been quite busy lately and haven't even had the time to lurk, but I knew I couldn't stay away long.

I took my Calypso Jr. camping last weekend, and boy what a tough little knife! (Some of you may remember that I had my doubts about its toughness the first time I handled it. Shame on me!) We were rustic camping, and I took my Calypso for its SE and had a fixed blade Muela for the PE. The Calypso took everything I threw at it, and for some tasks outperformed the Muela. I used it to prepare food, cut rope, and even spent a few hours carving a branch of hemlock into a servicable hiking stick. It did all this, and at the end the SE was still hair-poppin sharp! I will never be a disbeliever again. Long live the mighty Calypso Jr.!

It is quite strange to me that although everybody is praising the Calypso jr., the model is currently discontinued. IMO this is a revolutionary model.

It is even more strange because Spyderco asked for our opinion as users on which models to discontinue when they were culling their lineup. As I remember it the Wegner and the Calypso Jr were two of the top "keepers" for this and the other forum.

The Calypso Jr. is one of the best designed folders ever made. It's performance is so far ahead of any other small pocket knife it's a joke. The handle is perfect for anything but extreme martial bladecraft (and darn good for that). The blade is simply as good as it gets for a multi-purpose EDC folding knife. Search any of the forums and you'll find that this opinion is shared nearly universally.

I suspect it was dissed because it's blade is so similar to the Temperance folder with the leaf blade that it was feared it might hurt sales of that also excellent, but pricey, offering.

I'm just thankful that several forumites here suggested I pick up a Calypso Jr. back when they had just been discontinued, but were still readily available.

Those who have read my post about the Calypso in the past know I'm
a die hard fan of this spyderco. Some may also remember efforts to
convince Sal not to drop because it was an advance design and would
take awhile to catch on. Alas, It was cut from the line to early. The odd
point that puzzels me is the Calypso just won't "go away" like so many
other discontinued spydercos. Hmmmm.......Could it be that the Calypso
deserves a second chance?????

What say spydernuts?????

Hi all,
**** geeeaaaa the Calypso jr. deserves a second chance. I whole-heartedly agree that it was cut from the line too early. I think it did not get enough public recognition or enough time for it to have had the chance to sink down into people's psyche's that this knife rocks. The only reason I am currently waiting for a pe frn Dragonfly in the mail as an every day carry is because I want to save my calypso jr. for special occasions since it was discontinued (just hope the dragonfly isn't too small for my medium-sized hands). I am a firm believer that if the Calypso jr. does not come back exactly as it was, then the reincarnations (and reincarnations of this knife are inevitable) will eventually evolve right back to the current unfortunately discontinued.

The Calypso Jr is like an artist passing away, it’s not appreciated until it’s gone.

I looked at it from a online catalog once and didn't think much of it. I then later selected it because of size. Once in my hands it was a whole different story, I had to have more hearing it was being discontinued.

It would be nice to see it come back, I would buy some more.

Howdy Aarenb! Welcome to <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>Land! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

SE Calypsos can still be found, if you know where to look. Ekinfeworks.com and knifecenter.com both had some last I looked.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

It is without a doubt one of the best EDC knives Spyderco ever made. VG-10 steel, compact yet comfortable, a blade design that went through any everyday material without blinking, and they were cheap! I got two of em for less than my Police cost, and one of them was from the SFO! so now I have one that I carry for EDC, and one to keep as a collector's item. If you wanted a Delica with a finger choil, this was the knife. If you wanted an endura the same way, you got the big brother (I have one in Micarta; it's my hidden gentleman's carry).

I only wish I'd have bought a couple more lightweight PE's while I could. The two I have probably won't last me the rest of my life, and I would love to give a spanking new one to my son when he gets old enough to appreciate the superiority of this wonderful tool.
