Paperstone as a handle material?
I brought this up a while back and thought I'd check in regarding it. I'm just hoping Sal can comment on any plans(or not) for paperstone. I think he mentioned getting some material in to evaluate a while back. I know there was talk of a Caly Jr sprint in micarta, paperstone might be interesting.
Thanx

Would seem from this post they're still seriously considering it.

Plum Caly Jr, yes please...gull wing wrote:I had a Buck 112 in paperstone. The material is really great, it takes a nice color, polishes nicely, and of course is super light. I would think it would have to be backed up with liners as the Buck did. I would love the Calypso Jr in a nice plum color. :)
Thanks Paul. The Deacon wrote:Would seem from this post they're still seriously considering it.

I got some Paperstone recently and am using it for some Mule Scales. I bought a 0.25" thick Epicurean cutting board (factory second) and chopped it up into 5"x1.5" slabs. One small $8 cutting board yielded enough material for six pairs of scales. The Paperstone is a nice charcoal grey color. I'll post pictures of the Mule work-in-progress soon.
In reality, Paperstone is just a trademarked brand name for a phenolic laminate made with a paper base. For all functional purposes, it is exactly like paper-based Micarta (which is also a trademarked brand name). Based on my experience with it in the shop, it works and finishes almost exactly like paper Micarta. Good stuff.

Thanks Sal. I think in the matte finish it is quite grippy and it looks nice IMO.
And thanks for your input too Ted. I might have to look into tinkering with some one of these days. Where'd you find the seconds board?

Look on the Epicurean Cutting Boards site (link below) - the web specials page has a changing list of seconds and deeply discounted boards. Look for boards that are 1/4" or 3/16" thick.araneae wrote:Thanks Sal. I think in the matte finish it is quite grippy and it looks nice IMO.

I used a T square to mark the boards up into the correct size, then ripped them on the table saw. In five minutes, and had a whole mess of scales ready to go. My first set is going on my soon-to-arrive Cruwear Mule. :)
Another source for Paperstone material is to find a countertop distributor who fabricates Paperstone countertops - and get one of their sample kits. Paperstone is made in a wide variety of colors (the dealer below sells a kit with nine color blocks). I took two of the 3"x3"x3/8" samples, ran them through the joiner and epoxied them together. After it cured, I cut it in half lengthwise to get a pair of bi-colored scales that are 6"x1.5"x3/8".
Fun stuff! I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

PaperStone® is also being used by Lamson & Goodnow in their Earth kitchen cutlery lines and their GoodNow™ kitchen utensils line http://www.lamsonsharp.com/store/c/3446-Earth.html. Wüsthof is making a knife in conjunction with Epicurean http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products ... ing-board/ FYI: Epicurean's laminate comes from Richlite http://www.richlite.com/, although previously from Reed Products http://cuttingboards.com
