What's Your Smoothest Spydie

#1

Post by Slash »

After fondling my latest Spydie and getting more used to the compression lock on it. My Yo 2 seems to have just the right amount of detent and flies open as well as drops closed very nicely.

I must confess that I now own more :spyder: knives than any other brand. Guess that officially makes me a fan boy now.

My Manix2 is fairly smooth although I'm confident my blue PM2 will upstage it once it arrives.

do we all have our definitions of smooth

I was thinking PM2/manix 2 as ball bearing smooth. No resistance when working the lock to free the blades.

I will agree that my GB and Sage are very smooth in movement, but not freeflowing smooth.

believe it or not; my CAT is very smooth too and I think that just uses nylon bushings/shims; not bronze.
G-10 DragonFly is smooth as well in the same sense.
I would say my least smooth operating knive would be my Native 5, but it might need more breakin time than the other, IDK

I don't have very much smooth Spydies, especially lock backs.

Almost all of them came with a tiny amount of play and I absolutely can't stand that :(
So I adjusted them by tightening the screws or peening the pin untill the play was gone (or to the point I can live with)

However there's one little bugger that came almost picture perfect being my black Ladybug III/SE Collector number 090V.
Not a hair of play and smooth as glass.

Oh, and I almost forgot the Jigged bone Kiwi Paul gifted me. Same thing
That knife is one piece of perfection ;)

Well, I have several hundred of Spydies and my smoothest one is still the C40 Jot Singh Khalsa.

For pure smoothness, nothing compares to the T-Mag. Zero resistance once the magnet is overcome, and the magnet is easily overcome.

In knives I'd actually trust to stay open while I'm using them and closed in my pocket, I'd rate my Lignum Vitae Stretch as tops. Plenty of resistance, but buttery smooth movement with no hint of friction. Like pushing a heavily loaded, well lubricated, hand truck up a slight upgrade.

The one that has the smoothest action on it would be my C08S all stainless Harpy.

For me it would definitely be the Gayle Bradley. Almost as though it had one of the ball bearing systems at the pivot point. Smooth as glass.

Sage 3 for me. Granted, I don't have that many Spydercos and most of them are lockbacks, but still... This Bolt Action Lock is really smooth.

My smoothest:

Gayle bradley
Sage1

It's a difficult question because I don't own a non-smooth Spyderco. Not one. Even my Chaparral is warm molasses smooth since it got broken in. The Chaparral was the one and only Spyderco I've touched that was below Spyderco's near perfect standard (IMO) as far as smoothness goes. Compared to every other Spyderco I've seen or heard about it was hideous. However, all other aspects of the knife were so likeable I never considered selling it. Now that it is as perfect as all my other Spydercos I'm glad I didn't sell.
