how long did they use the spyderco hole? about two years? well the knife shop in spokane has a proto.... mmmmmmmmm.... me like......if you ask me, they have pushed about as close to "round" hole design as it can get without infringing copyright.

Buy an Endura instead. Approximately the same price with a 10x increase in quality.

Ascent was the first BM knife I bought, and it was flimsy crap.

don't be stupid, a large company like Benchmade gets permission from Spyderco to do that. I have many Benchmades that equal or surpass Spyderco's quality and vise versa. Rico

I do have all the respect for Benchmade. They, like , are a standard in cutlery (IMO). However, I stick close to

The Ascent series, until the Ascent II's came out, were total crap. The pivot point of the blade had a design flaw in it that made the knife have a nasty hitch in it when it was about half way open. They have fixed that, with the help of one of their custom designer guys (Pardue or Osbourne, I'm not sure which), but have used a lesser quality blade steel (from ATS-34/154CM to 440C) to keep the price down...or increase the profit at the expense of performance.

Its all fun and games til somebody loses an eye, then its fun and games you can't see.

Benchmade make excellent knives now. Spyderco uses lesser steels even now. Lets not putdown one because ours are better. I must say there isn't a Benchmades I would buy at this time. I have two that I'll be keeping forever though.

Spyderco over all others!

Now Now Gentleman, this is a Spyderco forum not a Benchmade bashing forum. You dont see people on the BM forum bashing s now. I have bought and traded more spydercos then I can remember, mostly because they are cheap, easy to acquire and I dont really care for the FRN. Only 3 modesls have stayed with me. The Delica, Cricket and Military models, but you dont see me bashing BM. Honestly I wont buy a Ascent because it reminds me of a Spyderco but Spyderco doesnt have something called an Axis lock either. I believe that both companies have there place in the knife world. With out these two we would be stuck with tactical ginsu folding knifes.
We have created a market for these two companies and its the competition between these two that keep the "good stuff" coming. I wouldnt hesitate to spend the money on either companies. IMHO I think that those who have owned both know that its like comparing apples to oranges. BMs are for the more sophisticated, and for those who want a little more out of a knife (IE anozided Ti spaces, T6 AL handles)and s are for the more simple man(FRN, plastic spacers, lack of color in line up except for the Chinese Lum). Maybe one day we will see a Spyderco Auto, or even a Spyder-bali..who knows but in the mean time if you wanna bash there is a company called Cold Steel that makes and butterfly looking knockoffs with something called Carbonr5 Steel........

BM,Strider,Spyderco,Busse,Microtech,Surefire,Walther P99, Kimber .45APC so many toys......

A Brand-bashing knife club! Good sweet mercy...

I reckon that 45rook has the right idea here, folks. This isn't the place to bash your not-so-favorite knife companies. I know, I know, there ARE a heap of cheesy knife companies out there. So what? I recommend that we all stick to what we like best. This way, nobody gets their feelings hurt when somebody mentions "this or that" about a certain brand that they like.

Jus' want to see things kept peaceful...

Getting back OT, I own an Ascent, and it's perfect for "light" knife days. It shares time with a white micarta Spydie Jess Horn and a Gerber import I've grown fond of with a red anodized aluminum handle. With any of these in my pocket, though, I usually have something heavier duty on my belt.

Just 'cause yer paranoid don't mean someone ain't out ta getcha

not bashing Benchmade at all. In fact, I probably own just as many BM models as I do Spyderco. I merely said that the Ascent/Eclipse model, IMHO, sucked -- especially when compared to the quality one would find in the Endura, a comparably priced knife.

I got one of the Ascents back when it was called the Eclipse. My least favorite BM knife. The lock and backspring are comparatively weak.

That said, I love both BM and Spyderco knives. I examined one of the newer Ascents, with the TSEK blade and thumb studs, and BM has definitely upgraded the Ascent line. I'm not really interested because I think the best Zytel-handled lockbacks are made by Spyderco. I like BM's other knives, though, and one of my fave's is the Griptilian, which is, IMO, far, far superior to even the improved Ascent.

I think in the cutlery industry, Spyderco and Benchmade have a type of "friendly rivalry" which helps each company to continue to grow and evolve. An improvement in one stimulates improvement in the other. It's because they are the two "top dogs" of the specialty cutlery industry.
