Original GIN-1 Native, Can the factory help me with this?
Original GIN-1 Native, Can the factory help me with this?
Eight Years ago or so, I was working in a factory helping make changes to the assembly processes. We needed to move something fast, didn't have a screw driver, dumb me pulls out his Native and "PING" there goes the tip.
I just dug this out wondering if there is anything that can be do to salvage this little guy?

Sure can be fixed. The spine just needs to be ground down a little to meet the edge. It'll be a little shorter, but should still serve you for quite a while. Looks like the serrations could use a little sharpening as well. Keep in mind, however, that they may charge extra to regrind it since that's not covered by warranty.
Absolutely, that is fixable. Bring it back to life by sending it to Spyderco.

Yesir they'll fix that for you. They specifically mention that they regrind broken tips in their Repair web page. You'll have to include a $25 check (I think in addition to the $5 return shipping fee), but they'll put a factory razor edge back on it as well.
Otherwise if you have a bench grinder you can do it yourself for free as I did for my Delica once. Just grind it down a (tiny bit at a time) on the swedge side until it's blended in sufficiently and then sharpen on a sharpmaker or benchstone.
...or I guess you could take advantage of the broken tip and use the knife as a multi-tool since you now have a flat-head screwdriver built in :p

If you fix it, you won't have a screwdriver anymore! Keep it as is! It's a rare "screwdriver" variant...a collector's item!

If you decide to do this, make sure to keep it cool so you don't ruin the heat treat.EricTheRed wrote:Otherwise if you have a bench grinder you can do it yourself for free as I did for my Delica once. On the plus side, it's now legal carry in more places. :)
