poliwog is slipit in disguise????

Postby gus88 » Fri Aug 26, 2011 4:33 pm

so ive had my poliwog for some time now and have always appreciated and loved its uniqueness as far as shaping and ergonomics go. in fact it is in my opinion the most comfortable grip and im surprised more full "four finger choils" arent implemented in designs.

however today for the first time i tried testing the lock strength and to my surprise i could over come the ball bearing lock and snap the blade back in quite easily. in fact i can even do it with one hand after a couple tries.

i am not too afraid of the blade coming back in during use because of the ergonomics, and how the knife is designed to be used. but i am wondering if this is why they discontinued the knife? or do i have a faulty one?

both of my manix 2 with ball bearing cage locks do not do this

I just tried mine, and no amount of force I apply to it, with one or two hands will overcome the lock.

It's not supposed to do that. Your ball must not be seating quite far enough to lock up properly.

Send it in. Something isn't right.

Just checked my poliwog, lockup is good.

But at one time I checked and found that I could overcome the lock. What I found was that dirt had gotten into the lock and stopping the ball from coming fully forward.
Give it a good clean first and check how far the ball is going into the lock.
Also push the back on the ball a bit and make sure there is good tension on the spring.
May not be the problem, but worth a check.

My poliwog locks up strong and the only way I can close it is if I release the lock.

Gus,

I had the same problem with one of my Dodo's. I sent it in and it was fixed.

I just handled a Poliwog recently at the knife shop...that is a cool little knife...not really something i'd carry or use but i really liked the design and i agree the 4 finger choils is pretty cool. I'm sure different hand sizes could be an issue with a design like that.

But yeah i would definitely send it in, sounds like the ball isn't engaging enough. I wouldn't be forcing it closed anymore either just in case something gets damaged.
