I'm sure that's what he meant. He didn't know Spyderco had misspelled it. :D

I have a Chapparal and and a Caly 3.5 Superblue both on pre-order, and it sounds like they should be getting ready to ship with dapagco's post announcing their availability.

I am really looking forward to them! For the Chapparal, it's the CF handle and convenient size. I have really grown to like twill CF.

I've had a request at New Graham for one from about the day after I got the sample from Sal. :) Even that was slow, as it took me less than an hour to realize this was one model I absolutely had to have at least one extra for backup.

Must admit, the titanium version doesn't grab me the same way. Perhaps when I see the finished product I'll change my mind or, if it's smooth ti like the Sage II, I'll consider it as a candidate for engraving.

As for availability. A couple CC numbered ones have already been spotted on one dealer's site so, with any luck, most dealers should have at least a few within a week or so.

Anxious to see the Chaparral and compare it to Caly 3 and Sage 1. Hope they are here by the weekend. :spyder:

Caly 3.5 Super Blue should be interesting as well. :spyder:

These sprint releases are realy putting a dent in the monthly budget!

Think many dealers have them already, or will in the next day or two. In another thread here, several dealers were reported to have them in stock yesterday. Know New Graham had 7 yesterday after I ordered mine, and they now have 4.

As for the comparisons....

Thickness, compared to Sage I...

Thanks for the size comparison Deacon. Very helpful for me in making a decision between the Sage1 and the Chapparal.

It's Chaparral.

Sorry but most are getting it wrong. I had to look up the word myself. They should have just called it Tiny Sage. :p

I am interested in getting one, but I'd like to see what people think of the production model - and I would really like to see a photo of one.
Has any one actually had a production model in their hand?
It looks like a winner to me.

I have one on the way from NGK. Once it arrives I can take some side by side pictures of it and the one Sal sent me back in February. Have a hunch they'll be identical, aside from the scratches it has acquired from six months of use and that I removed the clip for more comfortable loose pocket carry, but we should know for certain either today or tomorrow.

It arrived. Photos to follow, but I can only see one difference, and it's one I think most folks will approve of, based on the comments my original photos received back in Februrary. The clip on this one is black, rather than silver.

EDITED TO ADD: Here are the photos, which show one more, very minor, change. The font used for the tang lettering is smaller and more compressed. Bit harder for my old eyes to read, but no big deal.

I hope it's not painted black. Is it anodized? I dislike when my clips get chipped and scrapped. :(

I'll buy the silver one off of you :)
Spyderco please make a wire clip version of the Manbug/Ladybug!

Not about to try scratching it on purpose, but to me it looks more like bluing, anodizing, or some other electroplating technique, than painting. Any coloring will eventually show signs of wear, so scrapes are always possible. On the other hand, I really doubt it will chip. Also, since its round wire, there are no corners or edges and the finish on those always seems to wear the fastest.

It's also the same clip used on the Sage I, so perhaps someone who carries one of those clipped can say how it has held up for them. Not to mention, since the wire clips used on all current Spyderco models equipped with one are interchangeable, anyone who strongly prefers a silver or heat browned looking one can order it.

I really wanted to get one of these knives but now I don't. I just can't accept the smaller font on the tang.

Ok, I changed my mind, maybe I can get used to it with therapy. :D Very nice looking knife.

I don't see it on NGK's website. Anyone have a link to a dealer with it?

For some reason it doesn't appear on their Whats New page. You have to type Chaparral in the Search box and spell it correctly. Then it shows up, like this. Might be why they still have 3 left.

It looks good to me. How do you find the action of the knife when opening and closing, and is the blade well-centered?
My Caly 3 has an especially smooth action. I hope that this model is similar.

Blade is centered, action feels a bit stiffer than the one I've been using for six months, but to me that's to be expected. I'd say it's on a par with my other brand new midlocks.
