G-10 Harpy/Spyderhawk: A set made in heaven

And I'll say it again: We need a G-10 Harpy/Spyderhawk Combo Set! (Preferably in SE, but a set of each SE & PE works too! - Two sets!) :D  :D

(Sal once told me "Never say never", so I'm going to keep hoping for this set!)
Bohica I have a feeling you and I are going to sit down a have a very serious talk one of these days :D And I also have a feeling that we are not going to disagree on much either

A G-10 Harpy/Spyderhawk set is one I would go way out of my way to make sure I had. I've wondered a lot what a G-10 Spyderhawk would feel like in a hard use/hard work scenerio. And if the steel was either ZDP-189 or one of the other supersteels I think it would be hard for Spyderco to keep those blades in stock for very long.

There is a growing Hawkbill fan/user base and it just keeps getting bigger all the time. Even my old thread that just doesn't want to die ( Now's The Time: For a New Hawkbill) gained many new Hawkbill enthusiasts. And I don't give myself any credit at all because people are just simply trying them and discovering that these are great hard use knives and they definitely have a pragmatic purpose.

Wow!! A G-10 Harpy/Spyderhawk Set!!! I'll let the people do the talking on that one. That would be a MUST HAVE for me.

Hehe, we aren't that far apart, although I'm not sure where Grain Valley is located.

Honestly, my second thought after I got my G-10 Harpy (Which BTW, I went and got based on your recommendation.) was, "WOW! Wouldn't a Spyderhawk made like this be the PERFECT companion knife to this one!?"

(My first thought was "What a GREAT knife! Why did they stop making/selling these?")

JD, after reading your post I thought of something.

We have yet to see a model with both G-10 AND ZDP.

I wonder why that is.

I carry a Tasman every day. In my workplace I am limited to a 3" maximum blade. The Tasman is light, has great cutting power and the yellow scales are 'friendly' to balance the wicked SE blade. The corrosion resistant H1 steel and Ti clip are icing on the cake.

As much as I love Hawkbill, I still only have the ladybug H1. I need to get a move on and get a Tasman, Harpy, and Spyderhawk. What I really want though is the Superhawk.

I'm very curious. What sharpener do people carry to do a quick touch up job on an SE blade when out and about or on the job and don't have access to a Sharpmaker?

I would imagine most people don't worry about it unless they're going to be doing a ton of cutting. Best part about se is that it cuts even the the blade is dull.

The edge holding on any SE blade (especially H1) is way up there. I mean, WAY up there. :D

It's gonna take a long time before it's not "sharp" and even then will saw quite well. There is an edge destruction video on youtube someplace where they destroy a Byrd Wings with 8Cr13Mov, plain edge and serrated. After 7 minutes of cutting leather, rope, steel bar, it would still cut all materials. The PE edge lasted like 2 mins.

G-10 & ZDP-189> Why not?

I don't know why that is Brother but I say it's high time we got the folks out in Golden Colorado to at least give it some serious consideration.

I just think that combination would go great for a set of Spyderco's super-classic Hawkbills. It might even set a precedent for what people would really like to see in that arena.

Definitely offer them in sets of SE & PE both. I think ZDP-189 along with G-10 handles would be a collosal idea. Not to mention how durable they would be. Or just a superb collector set if you so chose.

Hawkbill sharpening. There are other methods I'm sure

The Sharpmaker is the ultimate sharpener for Hawkbills. But DMT has some conical diamond rods that do a nice job. I've used them both with good success.

Maybe this is truly something we need to do a thread on. Because the Sharpmaker may not be available to a lot of folks who like Hawkbills. I'm sure that there are other ways of sharpening one proficiently. Yeah it's something we probably need to discuss further on a separate thread.

I love sharpening threads anyway because they always usually reveal some new ideas.

Oh and don't forget that Spyderco also has the 701 Profiles which I've also used to sharpen Hawkbills with good success as well. Everyone should have a set of those.

The spyderhawk would look nice in G-10 with ZDP-189. :D
