Need Information about YOU!

#1

Post by travis quaas »

To the mighty people of <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> forum.

Because I am still a little new to this...I would like to request general information about all of you. It would help me to know where you are from, what <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>'s you carry, what you like about <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>, what you don't like about <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>, and anything else you would like to tell me about yourself. I not sure, but perhaps it will bring out some of the lurkers (which I am hoping for). This is not a survey to benefit <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>. This just would help me to associate some history with the username. With so much history out there, I figure everyone would like to share some of it. Thanks ahead of time for your posts (wouldn't it be funny if no one did?) <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Maybe this will bring everyone a little bit closer to each other? <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Travis,
What a good idea! You will have to participate as well, however.
Here goes:
My first name is Mike, I turned 30 yesterday <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>, and I am a grad student in Social Work at MSU. I have been collecting knives for a few years, but my collection recently took off last October with my first <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>. It was a FRN PE Native, and I have never looked back! I currently own, including the Native, a SE SS Delica, a PE SS Copilot, and have a FRN SE Calypso Jr. on the way! My wife supports my addictive behavior as long as I don't spend all my tuition money on knives!
I am also into several different sports, including karate, in-line skating, mountainbiking, golf, hiking, camping, running, etc., etc.
I work as a crisis counselor, and also am working for the University on a statewide school evaluation.
If there is anything else you would like to know, feel free to ask.

TQ,
I've only been in the forum since fall 2001. I got interested because my brother gave me a Q and in researching what it was I opened the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> cornucopia(sp). I actually drag my 14 year old son to flea markets to see if we can find some(he's getting a Blue PE Salsa for Jr. High school graduation). My wife (also Shirley) calls it bonding. I call it <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> virus. I also have a 12 Yr son (Boy Scout) and 9 Yr. Daughter.
My EDC's are Ti Salsa at work and Calypso Jr. Ltwt. PE for the weekends. At last count I actually own 32 knives and 1 sharpmaker 204. I've also braved the international market and I've acquired non-US knives or out of stock knives from Japan.
The other <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> I've acquired I'm keeping for Trades on Q's, since I don't use very many. So the only knives I'm wanting now are Q's I don't have <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>, the BF Blue Native and awaiting the Paramilitary.
As far as <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> (the company) I like the quality of the knives. For negatives I can't think of any that I've had yet (and hope not to).
Chris (in NH)

Be Excellent to each other.

Xibalba,
Here some info about me.

My name is Travis (As you have already figured out!). I am 28 years old. I am a disabled veteran. Got out of the Navy in 1997. Went straight to work on my degree (Secondary Education). Unfortunately, (much to the dismay of my advisors, students, faculty and administration) I decided during my Junior year not to go into Education. Colorado is currently 49th in the nation in funding for education. Believe me that I was not going into education to get paid! But, the VA was paying for my education. So, I needed to follow through with my education. I am happily married to an Assistant Principal. Mind you, that wasn't her best quality. She is Irish, that's all I needed to know! I'm not sure if you have seen my previous posts, but I have 4.5 years experience in the outdoor retail business. But, once my current co-worker told me about an opening here at <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>, I grabbed it in a heartbeat! I play the guitar. I enjoy hiking and fly-fishing. (if I didn't know any better, I would say that this sounds like a dating service reply!) <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> I am originally from Seoul, South Korea. Was adopted at age 3. The biggest blessing is, that my parents adopted my sister and brother at the same time they adopted me! (3 for the price of 1?) I love talking about knives and anything that has to do with <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> amoungst other things. I hope to discuss buying <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> from Sal Glesser (this may be too presumptuous <img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> ). I know I have a lot to learn up to this point. But, at the same time I know that I will be learning for the rest of my life.

I carry the Native Lightweight, Calypso Jr. Lighweight, LadyBug, Salsa Blue, Delica Lightweight, sometimes all at the same time. Just recently had my second anniversary with my wife. Needless to say I got her a knife (and for you ladies out there, I didn't stop with just getting her a knife!) <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Everyone, don't hesitate to e-mail me if you need anything. Let me know how I can help you.

I am 41 years old and own my own business. My favorite EDC spyderco is a CF Cricket with file work by Recupero. I am Spyderco Collector 108. While I have almost 100 Spyderco knives my favorite EDC is a Brad Duncan Whiplash with Red G-10 scales and he is working on a small Whiplash with Damascus blade and RED CF scales. RR
P. S. Find out why the Pride is already shipping and the collectors have not received thiers yet. RR

Me? I'm a great lover of Spyders, but sadly, few shops carry them here in NW Ohio. I am currently attending University, and attempt to convert almost everyone I meet to <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>. Often, I succeed.

I collect knives in general, possessing around 50 currently. My love for blades started many moons ago in Scouts, when a poor ignorant Scoutmaster handed this blade-a-holic a knife for the first time. Love at first sight. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Spyders I carry? Depends on the day. Often, it's the Dyad Sr. or the Endura, though the Native comes out sometimes. The Mouse is reserved for slightly classier duty.

Now, for the history behind the name. Simply put, my username nearly everywhere else is Knight/Rocket, after my high school and college mascots. Here, it's Sword and Shield, bowing to both my love of cutlery and my solemn pledge to uphold the tradition of the Knights.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

I honestly don't know how I got grey in my beard, but I do...

I was born in NY,NY, raised in Brooklyn, but moved around for a while. I've lived extensively in Texas, Montana, Boston, Monteal, Washington D.C. and finally settled in the Philadelphia area. My mom and brother now reside in Colorado. I've been married for almost thirty seven years and we have a fourteen year old who works hard at school. She plays field hockey and Lacrosse. When she was ten, she climbed the Third Flatiron in boulder.

I'm an engineer and I integrate weapon systems for both Cruiser and Destroyer navel platforms - primarily the U.S. navy, but under their foreign military sales program, other friendly navies, as well.

I have loved knives since I was a cub scout. While in the service, I found the utility and comradrie of trading knives. I view knives primarily as tools, but haven't overlooked their tactical capability..

I'm an Endowment Member of the NRA and mostly shoot skeet.

I play folk, ragtime and swing on piano and guitar.

My first encounter with Spyderco was through their line of sharpening ceramics.

One way or the other, you pay for your tools!

O.K. Travis.

My names AL, I was first associated with <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>'s
products in 81' when my cousin, a W.Haven PD
officer showed me the C01 "worker"; I had set
a goal to get one, entered the army in 82', tried to get the "worker" to no avail. Left the army in 83' and a LONG time passed. Then in 92' I acquired a C28SBK "dragonfly", found
it a little small for me, passed it on, acquired many firearms, lost interest in them
then I bought a aluminum handled(?) "cricket"
lost that, then in 98' got a "Q" & C29SBK
"cricket" which remained with me until I got
another just a month ago <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> I have some Spydies but the the "cricket" & "jester" are
my "mainstay" EDC's. It's been 21yrs since I've "known" <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> but about 4yrs since I began seriously collecting ( financial difficulties
aside <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>) I find little or no fault with this company & I think most of the forumites
feel the same way <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I am 45 years old, currently I head up a group of programmers who build custom software for Oregon Department of Revenue. I have been writing articles to teach programmers how to do various things in a programming language called Delphi. Visit this site to see the group I write for at http://delphi-jedi.org/Jedi:HOMEPAGE:0, about half way down you will see a link to one of my articles.

In my late twenties I worked along with cops in PA doing some dirty work (about when the group Move was doing nasty stuff). In the past two years I have been studying various disciplines i.e. firearms, knifes and kubaton to name a few. Have racked up about 200 hours in training. This is were I got turned on to <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> knifes, from several instructors.

BTW I play guitar, about 15 years ago I put a band together, did mostly cover tunes; Led Zeppelin, Rush and the likes. Had several of my originals played in Atlanta about 8 years ago. My favorite guitar is a Les Paul standard gold top, ES335 with trapezes tail piece, Charvel and Telecaster all going thru a Marshal 100 stack with a rack full of effects (Yamaha, Roland and Ibanze).

Both my son and daughter have been trained to be proficient with firearms. My son sports an Endura and now wants one of those <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Tools. My wife has no problems with me and knifes but does not carry, she does enjoy shooting.

Hello people,
Well If lurking means visiting a forum and just viewing posts then i was a lurker till a few weeks back!
My Name is Kaizer and I'm 30 years young. I work as a Project manager in a city called Bangalore located in India.
My love for knives (only folders and switchblades) has been around on and off for about 10 years. I dont have a single spyderco tho! <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> I hope to carry one someday.
(The military in plain edge and the dyad *not* dyad jr). My hobbies include motorcycling and photography and of course a new entrant...<img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> folders.
Here in india there are no <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> distributors <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> the closest being in singapore. I need to wait patiently till someone goes there so that i can request them to pick up what i want...i dont want to be there to pick up my own spyderco coz i know i'll overshoot my budget about 50 times! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
Have a nice day!

Thanks to Ms. Joyce Laituri for all the help.

Travis,

My name is Linda. I am a <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>holic. I was bit by the bug so hard that I even started selling them. I do this for two reasons: 1: to provide LEO's with a good tool at a reasonable price. 2: to feed my habit at a reasonable price. I am a Detective with the El Paso County, (TX, not CO) Sheriff's Department. I have been in law enforcement for 20+ years (19 with the SO), I am in the recovered stolen and abandoned vehicles section. I use <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>'s almost daily when I am at work. I don't have any kids, but I have 1 horse, Scout, a 17 hand Appendix Quarter Horse, and 3 dogs, 2 German Shepherds and a Shepherd mix. My husband, who in civilian life is with the US Customs Service, is now in the Air Force, he was activated on 24 September, and will be there for at least another 6 months or so. He is as big of a <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>holic as I am.

Hi Travis!<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

My name is Michael Reinhold, and I am a student at Tri-State University here in Angola, Indiana. I'm looking at getting a summer job with the local DNR. (Wouldn't that be fun?<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>) Anyway, my Spyderco affliction goes back a ways.

I remember when those cute lookin' Q's came out, and I thought that they were the neatest thing since sliced bread. Being a young guy, I didn't have the money to get one of those wonderful knives. (I have 2 of them to date.) Anyway, I bought my first Spyderco, the Spydercard, and that was the beginning to my wonderful experience with the Spyderco family. I almost went over to Benchmade at the start of my Knife-Quest, but good prevailed in the end.

So, there it is in a nutshell! I could ramble on and on for days about my escapades with my Spydies.....<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Take care!

Travis,

I have been in Law Enforcement for the past 5 years "fees alot longer" I do a little Bail Enforcement work on the side. I am 28 years old, and basicly a gun/knife nut.

Well, this thread looks interesting.

I'm probably the youngest one in here- turning 18 in two days.

I have always been interested in knives, but never really got into high quality ones until early this year. I've had my dragonfly for 5+ years now, but never really understood it's value until recently. I've added a Native to my mere collection.

I just graduated high school several weeks ago. I'm on my way to University of Michigan to study biology and/or chemistry. Yep, I'm a premed.

I used to be very interested in herpetology (study of reptiles and amphibians), but my interest has died down over the last few years because of lack of time. I still have a 5'6" Californian Kingsnake, however. I love engineering and building things, although I'll probably not pursue that as a career.
I work for a local dermatologist in skin cancer research and on other research projects. In nine days I'll be leaving for a three week backing trip across Europe.

Still young, still stupid.. But working on it. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Howdy Travis!

I am Sam. *hee-hee!* Turned 33 this year, works with a local afternoon paper here in Malaysia as a journalist. An ethnic Chinese, I grew up in Malaysia. Specialises in outdoors, travel and food. There's hardly anything I could fault on <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> except for those knives which are extremely small! I carry a PE Military, Spydercard, Ladybug, Spyderwrench and a '98 Endura as back-up on a daily basis. Owned almost every <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> on the SKU, missed a coupla good ones. Am in the process of collecting some classic <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>s such as the Terzuola C-15 and C-19. Made my pilgrimage to Spyderland in late 2000. Totally AWES<img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>ME trip! Got my first spydie 6 days ago (besides the ladybug I got when I was about 8 I think) and I am very pleased with it.

Hi Travis
My name is Jesper Voxnaes, I´m 31 (by 9/6-02) years old...or young. I live in Denmark (One of the nordic countrys)and work as a streetworker for the state. I am married to a girl!!!(in DK. guys CAN get married)Her name is Kerstin and we have 3 kids. " boys and a girl (aged 1, 3 and 5)
I am a knifemaker my self and earn a bit for the family savingaccount. This gets my wife of my back when it comes to buing more sssssspydies. The knives I do myself are most fixt blades in the nordic and the tactical design area.
I have collectet folders for about 12 years (3 years since the first bug hit my hand and bit me) and have to say that spydercos quality is outstanding, and the price is right where it belongs, holding the materials and the workmanship in mind.
