ELMAX: Any interest in a Mule Team for this great Steel?

#1

Post by Ankerson »

Starting a thread to see if there would be any interest in a ELMAX Mule Team. :spyder:

As some know I have done extensive testing on this steel and I believe it would be a great addition to the Mule Team Project.

It's a 3rd Generation Particle Technology steel and it's very clean, very tough and will take an extremely fine edge.

Carbon (C) 1.70

Chromium (Cr) 18.00

Manganese (Mn) 0.30

Molybdenum (Mo) 1.00

Silicon (Si) 0.80

Vanadium (V) 3.00

I'd sure buy a couple. I've had real good experiences with this steel and it's cleanness and good edge taking qualities for a stainless.

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.

For me it depends on price. The chemistry looks similar to VG-10 or XHP, so I probably wouldn't want to spend $80 to try it on a Mule.

You need to look a lot closer, they aren't even close to being similar.

I would love to see what Spyderco could do with this steel...

Absolutely. I'd buy at least two, maybe a couple more if they didn't put a two-per-person limit on them as with some of the past high-demand Mule Teams.

The Lionspy prototype was done with Elmax, I don't know if we've heard word that it will be Elmax or not. Bad thing about the Lionspy is that there is a supposedly a $300 street price.

Jim, you are right, it is slightly different. Mainly in the Vanadium. So, it seems like a more stain resistant D2 plus Vanadium.

Thanks for the chart. Look at all that chrome! Gotta be a downside.
At any rate, I'll buy as many as SFO will let me.

Looking through the list at the other steels, it seems like no one else can hold that much Chrome and Carbon together.

donut- thanks! I just found it in the LionSpy thread...Joyce or Taz indirectly confirmed the Elmax steel selection on the last page....sooooo, considering the cost of that knife, I would MUCH prefer a Mule Team variant to "mess with".

I'll take two.

Donut,
Thank you for the chart. This is a lot of vanadium.
Still I would rather have a folder with ELMAX blade, more affordable then LionSpy. Limitted run of Native5 would be great.
"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf"

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

ELMAX is very different, very stainless, and very tough and has a lot more carbide forming alloys than the others do.

ELMAX was developed for the Plastics industry were the chemicals are very corrosive so it had to be very rust resistant while still being tough and wear resistant.

What that does for a knife blade is it gives us everything we want the most and none of the things we don't want like rust, chipping (Even at high hardness) etc.

In the alloy percentages a 1 percent change is a huge difference, anything under 1 percent total is for grain refinement mostly.
