Military as EDC?..First Post !!

Post by Kaizer »

Hello All,

I'm an absolute newbie to Spyderco (and this forum). I have been logging on all the way from India and have been faithfully reading each word with relish. You guys are just great.

Here in India people gawk at you when you say "SPYDERCO". These quality cutters are absolutely unheard of in these latitudes and i had to harass my buddy while he was in UAE to get down a spyderco Millie for me.

Now my question for all of you. Would the Millie be a great knife for EDC? I've asked for a plain edge. ANy inputs from you regarding what i need to look out for when i recieve it (should happen in a month).

I'd love to learn from all of you as i gradually understand spydie talk.

Have a nice day, all and let me know if i can be of help...anything you guys need, info or just about anything do ask!

Have a nice day,

Kaizer

Kaizer,

Welcome to the Forum.

In my opinion, the Military is the best knife you could pick. It is an unbelievably lightweight knife for its large size. The G-10 scale (handles) material has a very secure grip.

This is my usual carry, although I do rotate other Spydies into the mix.

The only downside to the Military is that in some jurisdictions (Cities or States), there are restrictions as to the length of the blade, e.g., in Boston MA the max length is only 2 1/2 inches while the Millie has a length of four inches.

Once you hold the Millitary in your hand, you'll know what a wise purchase you have made.

One way or the other, you pay for your tools!

My EDC is a Military. I've rotated it with others, including a very nice large Sebenza, but I always go back to the Military. It's a terrific knife, once you get over being self-conscious of its size. It's light, durable, takes and holds a great edge, really cuts with great ergonomics. What else could you ask for?

Welcome Kaizer!
No matter where our locations are, we're all Global Citizens of Spyderco.

My personal opinion is: Millie especially the SE, is an excellent knife to carry for special occasions, eg. outdoor, camping. For EDC, take your pick from Spyderco list of less than 3". It won't be too intimidating, especially for office environment.

Howdy Kaizer! Welcome to <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>Land! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

As long as the Military is legal for you to carry, it's an excellent EDC knife for you. Some skill is needed to sharpen it, but nothing that an intelligent person can't figure out.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

Kaizer,

Welcome to all things <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>. Come in and sit a spell - love to hear the word from yet another member of the Global <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> community. Good choice on the Millie! You have to look far and wide and still won't find more bang for your buck...errr rupee!! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Stay safe! Stay sharp! <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

First off, Kaizer, welcome to the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>Spydie<img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> forum.<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

IMO, the Military PlainEdge is the best choice for EDC. I carry mine as my primary, along with my 35/65 Native for times when serrations would be the more appropriate choice.

As posted in other responses, you should check to see what the maximum blade length is in your area. If it's legal, you surely won't be disappointed with that Military.<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Welcome aboard. I'm into rather small knives, but the Millie is an extraordinary knife. EDC? No problem! I'm sure you won't regret it a second! (take care of the law regulations there, though)

The only problem that I have ever had with the Milli is the fact that the screws at the stop pin start to "walk" ...don't try to tighten them all the way because the blade action gets too stiff. My only solution to the problem was some lock-tight on the treads of the screws...that fixed it right up.

Kaizer,
Seems redundant to tell you now that the Military is a great EDC.

But anyway the Military is a great EDC. Others are right about local laws and customs but if you can go for it. You will find this a very useful knife.
