Yes indeed!!! Mr. Blonde's reports from the Amsterdam meet are the highlight of my collecting year. For me anyway, I look forward to the "Meet" reports more than the company catalog or the reports from SHOT.

Thank you, thank you.

Someday I'm going to show up and thank you in person.

Thank goodness I'm leaving for a four hour bike ride. It saves me from checking this thread 500 more times. Perhaps when I get home I'll be rewarded with a few more pictures.

Typically, "color" variations are not considered prototypes or concepts, so even though it wasn't shown, Spyderco could still be considering it.

The Mentaculous wrote:Incredible work as always! As I said on your BF thread, your proto pics are a godsend! Can't wait to get my first look at the Large Manix 2, Lil Temp 2, maybe even lum tanto sprint?? I'm drooling just over the thought of seeing them
I'm sorry, but the Manix 2 XL and Li'l Temp 2 were still concept models, so I won't post pics of those. They need more time in development before I can share those pictures. I do feel your pain though, especially about the Li'l Temp 2.

Spyderco 2011 Prototype – Balance SS

#51

Post by Mr Blonde »

The first Balance concept model was shown a couple of meets ago and I and a few other spyderknuts had been pushing Sal to put this little gem into production. Last year it finally happened, and now we got to see the Stainless Steel model.

Image

It’s thinner than my CF version, more slippery too. Still, Ed’s magic with ergonomics prevents this folder from being too slippery in the hand.

Image

At first I thought the lock on this prototype was completely travelled over, but on closer inspection I noticed that the lock-up was just right. I would recommend rounding of the sharp lower corner on the locking tab. I think it could be a little hotspot when the knife is used for a longer period.

I think I’d like to see the Balance a bit thicker, perhaps use some thicker Ti slabs? Then again, that would probably drive up the price too much.

Since I already have a nice CF version, this one probably won’t make it to the very top of my wish list, but I’m sure I’ll end up with one before the year is over.

Spyderco 2011 Prototype – Chaparral CF

#55

Post by Mr Blonde »

I feel the Chaparral is Sal’s revenge for the failure of the Cat model that was presented last year. Those looking for a small classy folder for the office need not look further; the Chaparral is just the ticket. Personally, I’d go with the Des Horn Folder but that one is a bit larger. Like the South African splinter picker, the Chaparral is a very slick handling little folder. If only the people at the Taichung factory would cut some sharper jimping on the spine of their knives.

Sal and Eric asked us to post our honest opinion about the shown knives. I will try to post my opinion about all knives I handled.

Des Horn Wharncliff folder
I really liked the shape, but I really don’t know what to do with it. The small machined fullers are a great touch. I didn’t like the ergonomics.

Yojimbo 2
Really liked the knife, but I can’t compare it to the Yo1. I can imagine it even has it’s uses as a edc.

Balance SS
-
Chaparral
Wow. A great knife, great ergonomics, an A for looks. The lock cutout is different, I like it.
