holy crap, my vesuvius arrived yesterday (233) how ridiculously expensive was that!? first theres the actual price 90 dollars if i remember rightly, then theres the shipping, about 25 i think, then theres parcel forces 30 more charge on it, totalling 145 dollars, i coulda bought a civilian for that...

MAT (ps fairly cool knife tho, not too keen on the compression lock, hacked open my finger in under a minute of it coming thru the letterbox)

Aye, same here Mat ~ me and Yog got shafted by Parcelforce and their mates in Customs too.

The Customs guy actually ripped my new box just so he could play with the Vesuvius!...Git.

I feal your pain.

Don't forget your mixing dollars and pounds. That 30 from Parcel Farce (oops, Force) was in pounds which means the final price is closer to $158

What was your problem with the compression lock ?
I liked the compression lock on the Ocelot, but I find the lock and thumb recess to be a bit small on the Vesuvius. My thumb really aches after 100/200 openings in a row

I'd request a new box, at least, as the old one was "damaged in shipping". It doesn't seem fair that customs can have no respect for your property and charge you for the privilege.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

well, the recess is too small by far, its a bit stiff too, like on the liner lock on my millie you barely touch it and it opens, but on this you have to do thumb acrobatics, i tried closing it by doing the traditional flick forward so it stops on your index finger but it simply sailed down and into my finger, so after a little while bandaging i started again but instead of flicking forward i extended my index finger and swung it under the blade to the spin to push down on it, or rather that was the plan, i actually ended up swinging my finger straight into the blade and gave myself a second fairly nasty cut through the bandage. then i gave up and tossed it into a draw never to bve seen again.

Hi everybody,

My thoughts on the 2002 Forum Vesuvius. Number 302 just came home to California.

1. Not really too expensive. Just about 90 bucks delivered. But I won't go into that. It sure is a beauty. Really dark burgundy (not burgandy) but she comes to color in bright light. Still very subtle.

2. I'm not sure about the compression lock yet (first of this, I prefer the lockback) but I'm giving it a chance. It produces a circular scuff on the lock side of the blade and the recess IS too small. But I'm working on breaking in the stiff lock release. Don't let it gravity or shake release on your index finger. Not enough finger choil (sp?).

3. My first blade in ATS-34 steel. Not quite a shaver from the box but the 204UF stones should fix that.

Cheers,

Jaxon

Weekend yet?

Oops, mis-spelling.

Thats the price we pay when the American dollar is higher than our own, not too mention to mention the shipping.

Although, to date, I have never been disappointed by the performance of the knives that I've received from Spyderco.

Hi Ruxton.
Give it a day or two then go try the Vesuvius again.
Both compression locks I've had have started off as the stiffest closers I've had, but after a day or two of constant openings they are both (inc the Vesuvius) some of the easiest swinging closers I have.

I did have quite a sore thumb after a couple days of constant closings (novelty factor and breaking the knife in), and became a little dissalusioned. Then after a couple days break I went back to the Vesuvius and just used it as a regular knife, i.e. only opened it when I had something to cut, all of a sudden the knife felt very good and the lock no longer seamed too tight.

As for trapping the finger on a closing, I once did this with a Civilian when I wasn't paying enough attention Now the first thing I do when I recieve a new knife is check where to place my finger.

Walk softly, carry a big stick.
