"Open carry" in Florida ?

Okay forumites, it goes like this : I was

standing in line at the local MVD here in

Ft. Lauderdale ( my new locale ) and there's

this cat w/ a Benchmande 556 "Griptillian"

( or a "knock off" ? ) clipped on the outside

off his pants to his belt next to his cell

phone. Something like that in Good Ol' New

Haven would have "set off" the cops, but there he is just standin' there, plain as the

nose on your face. I naturally the

un-inquistive type and let it fly-by, but this REALLY took the cake! Do any of you

Florida forumites know anything about this

WITHOUT giving me an "access link"? If that's

the case, when I get my "Shabaria" <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> I'll

wear it thus <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>! BTW don't ask me to ask the

cops. They probably would make me "assume the

position" and frisk me ! <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

"...and let him that has no sword sell his

robe and buy one..." Luke 22:36 <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

During my time spent in Florida, I never gave carry laws a second thought. Lots of years with belt-pouch folders and, later, multis and unconcealed Spydie clips. Never any problem. Once, when I had to go to the courthouse, I had to turn in my tiny Buck 526 at the guard station. When I was retrieving the knife after paying my speeding tic... err, after taking care of my business there ;-) I noticed the other knives that the guards were holding for folks - my 526 was the runt of the litter as you can imagine. There were several 110-type locking folders and a few larger pocket-clip models. (I can't remember specifically if there were any Spydercos, but then again I wasn't much of a knife knut at the time.)

You've found gun and knife lover's paradise -the South <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Grew up there, wish I could go back at some point.

You should get your Concealed Carry permit next...in FL it's as easy as taking the course, passing a written and shooting test, background check (no felonies), and voila!

Heres the poop on concealed carry in the
"Sunshine State" from Bladeforums.com : You
can carry, but not concealed ( even a sword
<img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> ). No particular blade lengths <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>; if you
do want to carry "concealed" it requires a permit ( easy to obtain )<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> but no felonies
<img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>. It makes good sense, though <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> the coppers would be taken by surprise if one
carried concealed ( without permit ). It's a case of "what you don't know CAN hurt you!"

"...and let him that has no <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> sell his coat
and buy one ( don't need one down here!<img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>).."

According to a law officer I talked to, in Indiana there isn't ANY blade length laws for carry. ( A person can pack a 6" folder in his/her belt without a hitch from the law. ) I guess I didn't realize that I had that wonderful priviledge!<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> "Autos", on the other hand, are a big no-no. He said that he'd "arrest me in a heart-beat" if he caught me with a automatic knife. So, I guess I'll just stick with my good old Spydies. ( Which are just as fast! )
