My first VG-10 , first VG-10 period!

Post by Alan2112 »

I have had my VG-10 Almite Navigator for a couple of days, so this is my first impressions. All the Spydercos I have owned have always been outstanding on quality, and so is this one. Although I have always noticed the ones from Seki seem to usually be a cut above, this one is a slight exception.

This particular knife has some machineing marks on the choil at the very end of the blade where it pivots, noticeable when locked open. Otherwise this knife is outstanding. I didn't think I would like the Almite model due to the vents, but they are well thought out, and give extra tack on griping. The almite blueing with the briteness of the polished blades make for one pretty little knife. You have to see one of these to appreciate it, the photos do it no justice!

The edge blade is the sharpest out of the box I have seen yet, with no play side to side or up or down. There is also no play side to side closed. The action is the smoothest I have ever felt on a lock back, even smoother the our G-2 Native. The action is helped out a little by the full size hole, much better then the Calypso Jr./Dragonfly. The egornomics are perfect for my small/medium hands, and better then our old Dragonfly. I really like how thin the handle slabes are, especially in the pocket!

This is my always EDC, no matter what other knives are on me, this one will be in my left front pocket. In the next couple of days I should get around to testing the cutting power. Over all I'm very content, so far. RKBA!

I got around this week to testing the cutting power, and edge holding performace of the VG-10 Navigator. It took 12' of cardboard, and one small hemp rope to dull the Navigator enough to warrent a resharpening. I did the same test on a 1095 Stockman clip blade, and it didn't quite need to be sharpened. In the past I've done this with ATS-34/CM154 knives, and they performed similar to the 1095. In my testing, and opinion VG-10 performs slightly better then ATS-55, and 440C. On the flip side 1095, ATS-34/CM154 are a slight step up. I am impressed by this steel, especially it's ease of sharpening, but 1095, and ATS-34/CM154 are still my favorite steels. In the future I plan on getting a knife with M-2 which should prove to be another outstanding steel.

You seem to have discovered that old blade dichotomy: You can have edge-holding, corrosion resistance, or ease of sharpening. Pick any 2 on a given knife. I always pick edge and ease, as staining really doesn't bother me.

D2 would also be a great steel step up, as would 52100. Both are semi-stainless and will hold an edge like there's no tomorrow.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.
