Can't get all in one perfect knife...

#1

Post by prisoner6 »

Let me start by saying that I love my Spydies. I have never been let down by one, and have had nothing but great experiences with the company. I love what I have seen from the company and appreciate the way they do business.

Now that doesn't mean I can't dream...

So here would be the requirements for my "perfect" Spyderco. If I have missed the one that fits, please let me know.

1. G10 or CF scales, preferably G10.
2. Golden Made.
3. Around 3" Blade Length. Prefer Leaf and FFG, but open-minded.
4. Not picky on Blade Steel, I haven't been disappointed yet.
5. Lock, prefer a back lock or BB lock.
6. Screw Construction.
7. Low Ride Wire Clip.

In short, a UKPK with a lock would be the ideal.

The only knife I know of that fits these requirements is a P'kal, but it's hardly a general purpose knife.

Again, this is mostly academic. I love my UKPK and my Caly3, just thinking out loud.

I say the stock Manix 2 fits your description, it's kind of heavy for general use. Well the sprint runs were your ideal knife but they are tough to come by.

The Super Leaf can be your ideal knife. I can't wait for that thing, I paid for preorder already. :o

A locking UKPK? The Caly 3 or Goddard Jr fits that description. The Goddard Jr is Partially Serrated. =\

What is wrong with the Delica?

*edit* Oh, I missed your Golden requirement with no substitutes. That knocks a few of my suggestions out.

I guess we are down to: Manix 2 or Native LWT. I would prefer a sprint run Manix 2, but the Native LWT isn't a bad knife and you get S30V. I've seen a couple pretty cheap yesterday.

I believe the Native is riveted.
The Manix 2 doesn't have a wire clip.
The Sage 3 would fit everything except that it's made in Taiwan.

Yeah, that's kind of where I ended up as well.

I like the idea of the Sage, but Liner Locks and Frame Locks aren't my favorites.

I'm pretty sure the Manix 2 will be my next knife. The clip isn't Wire, and it is big, but I like the looks of it. Is the clip matte or polished?

As broad as Spyderco's selection is, sometimes the only way to get exactly what you want is to be willing to pay the "my way tax". Aside from the wire clip, the upcoming G-10 version of the Native 4 would be closest, and I'd bet there's someone out there who could convert it to a low ride wire clip.

Yes. Yes. Yes. That's what I want. A T-mag with a BBL or backlock would do it for me too. Leafstorm comes closest, but for the crappy ergos when compared to UK and the framelock. Manix 2 is just too big for me to EDC. When I pull it out, NKPs freak out. A little bigger than a delica, smaller than a Manix2--UKPK, if only it locked.

For me, it's the Urban form factor and materials with a Compression Lock (or better yet, Bolt Action) that's the Grail Knife. Even the UKPK is a little larger than I care for. But there's definitely a market for something along these lines. I guess not many things are made in Golden, though. They can't make every knife there.

Yeah, the Caly3 ZDP CF would be spot-on for me if it had screws, not rivets :)
My spydies: Squeak, Tenacious, Terzuola, D'Allara, UKPK CF peel-ply pre-production, UKPK CF smooth pre-production, UKPK G10 orange leaf-blade, UKPK FRN grey drop-point, UKPK FRN maroon leaf-blade, Bug ... all PE blades :)
