Recommendations for a portable sharpener?

#1

Post by yuldeli »

Free hand sharpening with a stone is not one of my best skills. I am able to maintain a very sharp edge using my sharpmaker and am looking for something that will allow me to do the same in the field. Does anybody have any suggestions?

I dont have either one of these, but Sal once commented that he travels with a Duckfoot (diamond) and Goldenstone (ceramic). If you dont know what they are, check out the Spydie catalog. The both allow you to sharpen just like the Sharpmaker - with just vertical strokes.

If you are not going into the field for months at a time, perhaps just take your Sharpmaker along with you. If you are concerned about weigth and you have the cash, pick up a Duckfoot, and 701MF Profile stones. That is my hunting combo since last year. Not the most compact setup, but still able to do a lot. You can lean the 701 stones against the Duckfoot to keep the right angle.

Lee Valley, a Canadian toolmaker, has some compact DMT-style diamond stones that could be a good field sharpener:

Thanks, I think I might go the duckfoot route.

If you have the space but want to save weight, take the Sharpmaker with a single stone.

FIMS looks like the guy that drives around my neighborhood ringing his bell (my son confuses him with the ice cream truck!). I trust him with the mower blades but not much else.

I hear ya. The guy in my neighbour hood is the same one from 30 years ago. Lawn mower blades and thats about it.

Sean will do sharpening for you if you ask him at S&R.
