Hare brained idea, folding knife for kitchen?

#1

Post by dbcad »

Just curious. Is it possible for something like this? I'm thinking 6 inch blade length, thin, liner lock. I have no doubt it's been thought of before. There must be a reason it hasn't been done, maybe it has. Opinel??

If the hare brained thought is shot down I will take no offense. It woud be nice to have a folding knife more suitable for the kitchen. When I visit folks who aren't as knife nuts as I am their kitchen knives are sometimes dull. Just a thought. Most of my Spydies get some time in the kitchen. Maybe I should just sharpen my friends knives..lolol

Kevin Wilkins has a folding kitchen knife designs, the Ryback, although it is not as big as you would like it to be. He licensed the design so you can find a production version for a reasonable price. Searck Wilkins Ryback on eBay.

In general for hygienic reasons fixed blades are in my opinion better suited for kitchen use. They are easier to clean completely.
This being said, I love to use a big Opinel #12 and a Military for outdoor cooking (or when I visit friends and I know I may need to help in the kitchen) and bbq. The Rock Lobster also works well for this.

A.G. Russell has one made in Japan. I've given a couple to "chef" friends to pull out and wow people at a beach bbq or etc. For everyday use, just doesn't make sense as stated above--harder to clean, more places for stuff to collect and fertilize bad bugs.

The Dialex Junior will probably not be anywhere near 6", but the handle shape looks like it will be perfect for the pinch grip that cooks use.

Would there be a way to easily break such a theoritcal knife down to clean?? In the same spirit of modern meat slicers. Make it easy to clean and sanitze...
I don't make knives so it's difficult to realize the difficulties that would be encountered.

But a kitchen friendly folder would be nice if it's possible. I'm just throwing out an idea. I'm not qualified to judge the practical considerations.

I'll check out the Ryback

I'm one of the fixed blade for kitchen use crowd. If portability is the issue, sheath the knife and carry it on your belt or in your pocket.

I use a Carbon V Cold Steel Twistmaster in the kitchen all the time.

I really like look of the Breeden. A rescue blade with some sweep to it. What is the purpose of the swedge on the top of the blade?

It's SUPPOSED to be for weight savings. Not sure exactly how much weight is saved, but there it is.

I hope this one WILL have an SE version. Else why classify it as a Rescue? Honestly, it looks more like what the OP asked for in PE. A folding kitchen knife.
