Custom makers who use the round hole

#1

Post by Shmackey »

Does anyone have a list of current (or recent) custom makers who have licensed the round (not oval or rectangular--the real deal) hole? I know Jens Anso does, but he has stopped taking orders for a while. Wilkins does as well. Who else?

Don't have a list and, assuming one exists, not sure if Spyderco would publish it. Think it's safe to assume any maker Spyderco has done, or is in the process of doing, a collaboration with Spyderco is licensed. Among those who have not done collabs (yet) but are licensed to use the Spyderhole, Pat and Wes Crawford, Jurgen Schanz, and our own Brad Southard come to mind.

I ask only because I'm considering selling a few "extras" to fund a mid-range custom, and I'm not interested in anything without the round hole. :) So a list (even if not official) would help me narrow my search.

There was a thread around here somewhere where such a list was created. Maybe try searching for it. It exists, I'm sure it's incomplete but I recall there being about 20 makers mentioned.

One I forgot was A. T. Barr. Don't know how I did that, since I own a rather nice left handed example of his One Eyed Jack. :o A few more are named in this thread.

Mikkel Willumsen

Allen Elishewitz (AFAIK, only Pirela collaborations)

I must have missed plenty, so let's try to add to this list.
BTW, hard to know which ones are licensed or not, maybe Kristi or Sal will contribute to this thread...

That's Ben Cardoso, a french knife maker. Here's his homepage: http://dremeltingpotes.free.fr/
His designs are very rustic and rugged looking. He makes very nice knives.

i think it would be great to have a running list of the makers as it could help keep fakes or cheaters (using the hole and not paing for it ) in check
i know tho that it should not be a page by its self (or maybe it should ) because of being kind of advertising for the custom maker

Sal this move kind of puts the inhouse semi custom works off to the side i would guess that it would be easer to have the custom maker give the one off requests rather then to have a shop in golden taking kind of midtec orders
like dammy blades or dressed up handle scales

At the risk of piling yet another job on Kristi, I have to agree, a running list of those currently licensed would be great. Given that they pay for the license, I don't see any problem whatsoever with giving them a bit of free advertising. However, given the leaps of logic responsible for the absurd expectations some folks have in other areas, a disclaimer that inclusion on the list only means the maker is licensed and does not mean Spyderco endorses either their craftsmanship or business practices might be wise.

That's not to say any of the maker's named are not both excellent craftsmen and totally honorable businessmen, only that dealing with any one man operation carries some risk.
