First off, you're right: there needs to be a "balance" to this whole concept of knife carrying technique. Obviously, 17 knives strapped onto a person's body in every conceiveable location is a huge over-kill. While I don't see a need to carry a "backup for my backup" so to speak, I do see a definate need for a few quality blades to carry for different or unique experiences. For example, most of your traditional knives like Case or Schrade feature models such as the "Stockman" or "Muskrat" which feature 3 blades in one. First, the "Clip" blade then a "Sheeps foot" and finally, the "Spey" blade. Grand total: 3 blades!!
Yes, that is ONE knife vs. THREE different knives. But, would you want to spread your jam with a bayonet and cut your steak with a butter knife?! Get real here folks! Spyderco designs and markets these knives for specific needs, and while some are more useful than others on a day-to-day basis, some knives might be found useful to some people in THEIR daily operations. (i.e. I don't work around the fishing industry, but a Harpy would be useful for cutting rope/twine on a farm that I used to work for.)
In conclusion, I think that if a person has a need to carry 3 or 6 knives, than he or she has that right to do so. I recently heard of a police officer that stated that local officers now carry THREE Glocks: one for initial work, one for back-up, and one for emergency back-up. So, is this guy nuts for having 3 guns?! I think not. His business requires it!
Just take a minute and think about this, guys. It could change your attitude about this whole "knife carrying concept".

You need a right hand/left hand knife, right? Thats 2. You need a small sheeple friendly knife. 3. You need one knife thats only for emergency, extremly sharp. 4. To defend why I carry so many knifes, for tactical purposes. You never know when and where an attack will come. I have been in situations were it was impossible to go for my primary knife, instead had to go for a backup. Although it has not happen yet I carry my Cold Steel Spike down my back in the event I need to grab it when confronted in a stickup situation were grabbing a gun is not the order of the day i.e. up close and personal in a crowded area. Having a knife hanging down your back and the perp ask for your wallet, they will be in for a surprise if you do it right. I don't recommend that you try this without proper training, else you may end up six feet under. I continually train with professionals on handgun disarming several times a year.

I am curious why you find the carry of multiple knives so hard to justify. This sort of behavior is common among all of the collector subcultures that I am a part off (all tactical/sd issues aside).
People that I know through various fountain pen collection forums might carry as many as 5 or 6 pens on them, and up to another dozen or so on their desk or in their bag (and we are talking good quality vintage or modern fountain pens, not cheap office max/depot crap). Some of the confessed 'flashaholics' on the candlepower forums that I have talked to might carry 5 or 6 flashlights with them on a given day in their pockets or bags.
The knives, pens, and flashlights are functional tools that bring joy and satisfaction from their use and through the appreciation of their designs and manufacture. With any of these items, their use in public may invite questions that provide an opportunity to bring more people into the collecting fold. I have made dozens of ftn pen and 'tactical' folder converts around the office and among my friends by always having a few on hand and allowing people to try them out.

On duty I add the Emmerson Commander to my Right front pocket and the Timberline Warden to my Left front.
Off duty I carry the Chinook in my Right Front pocket because I usually wear a waist lenght leather jacket and it's harder to draw the commander with that coat on. If I'm going out off duty:ie bar/club etc I usually toss in a fixed blade as well.
Now then Yes I admit I carry multiple blades but when I'm on duty I like the commander for it's speed into action and it's heavy duty aspect, I use it for **** near everything cause I know it's not gonna fail me when I need it. The reason I carry a large folder on my off hand (left side) is to counter a gun grab. I am an armed officer and In my book if someone goes for my gun I want them to have my knife too.
and just because no one else has pointed it out yet two large blades isn't unusual if you consider that no many people aren't ambidextrious but there are many martial arts forms that stress double weapons like escrima or kali. If you train with two, carry two.

I guess that living in a different country we have different views on different things. Obviously you have your reasons for doing so. I can also see that many also carry guns for obvious reasons.
I guess living in Aust where carrying guns and knives is illegal, I would not understand the same logic as you do in the states, only coz i've never been there.
Everything I've said has only been in my opinion. I personally don't see any need to carry more than 2 of anything at any one time, whether it be knives, guns, torches, pens, or anything. I, myself have a big knife collection, and other 'illegal' weapons... and they all stay at home except for what I feel necessary to carry for self defense. I do carry 2 knives (ladybug and endura)which are legal to carry. I also carry pepper spray and an expandable baton, which are illegal to have in possession let alone carry, but I find necessary for my own protection coz I know that by the time the cops arrive, I could already be a dead man. But in anycase, point is, I don't carry just one form of protection or just one type of tool!

I have been in dangerous situations before. I've saved my mates life by breaking a guys arm and knocking another guy out with my baton. I've also saved my own life by using pepper on a group of drunken guys the size of football players. only time I use my knife is to cut things, not people.
I know that different knives are made for different purposes, but IMO, when you carry a heap of Spydies, many with the same blade type of metal and cutting edge, It makes no difference which one you use. Am i correct?
don't get me wrong. i'm NOT saying it's wrong to carry ten million knives. i just don't feel it's necessary. that's all.

I feel for you down there. Very relaxed laws here in Louisiana about owning and carrying pistols. Just bought 2 new ones this past weekend!! :-D We just became a shall-issue state about 3 years ago, so now more and more people are able to get concealed carry permits and carry legally.
No restrictions on knives here(other than no switchblades, but if you don't make a fuss nobody really worries about that either).
Batons and OC spray are great. I have a 16 inch ASP in the center console of my truck. I would much rather whack somebody with it than shoot or cut them.
I feel for you down there. Very relaxed laws here in Louisiana about owning and carrying pistols. Just bought 2 new ones this past weekend!! :-D We just became a shall-issue state about 3 years ago, so now more and more people are able to get concealed carry permits and carry legally.

It's been a long time since I read that article, but I've carried at least 2 Spyderco's since then.
