Chinese Folder received and a few questions

#1

Post by Mr Blonde »

Hello,

TOday I received my Chinese folder, which is absolutely stunning by the way, and I am left with two perhaps minor questions.

The liner is already leaning pretty far to the right (non clipside), when viewing the knife upside down or with the edge towards you. Is this a real problem? Doesn't this leave the lock with less room to adjust itself over time, i.e. will this linerlock be worn out faster than say my Military which has centered steady in the middle of the tang for some 2 years now?

And the clip came set-up for tip-up carry, I recall reading on the forums a while ago that other Chinese folders came from the box set up for tip-down carry. I love the tip-up carry for this size knife, especially since I will use this blade as a left handed utility knife. How did your chinese folder came from the box?

I am more interested in the lock 'problem'. Did your Chinese folder also came with a "right leaning" lock? Was this intentional design by Spyderco? I only have a Military and Wegner to compare the linerlock with, and they all center on the middle of the tang.

Thanks ,

Wouter

Hi Wouter,

I think you meant this for the main forum, not the technojunkies forum. However I can say:

#1. The clip can come from the factory either way.

#2. Liner position is only a problem if there is up/down play in the blade once locked up. Once the lock does wear, it can be adjusted again with the eccentric pivot pin (by the factory). If it really bugs you right now, you could talk to warrantee and repair about having it adjusted.

Hi carlos,

Thanks for the reply, I'll think I'll try it in the main forum as well, to see how other Chinese folder owners have their liners positioned

Actually, the leaning of the liner lock doesn't necessarily pose a problem. In shoddily built blades this CAN (but does not necessarily) show as a sign of lock defeation. Matter of fact, I own a blade of a different brand name (though not proud of it) that slides ALL the way to the non-clip side of the blade, yet it is still solid as ever. I don't believe the lock on mine will defeat easily, and the Spyderco probably even less. As for right now, examine the blade and see if there is any blade play. If the blade still holds solid in the open position, it should be alright.<img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
