I checked your profile and you were not kidding about the 200+ spydies! I need to step up my game and at least get another one! My instructor was talking to me about Apache or Sayoc warriors who carry 10+ knives on them and the first thing they teach is projectiles. But I can imagine knife throwing's valuable when you carry that many knives! Which is why I should get my collection up to 200! :)

IIRC Doc teaches police officers sometimes and he carries that many to see if the officers find them all when they pat him down...i am sure it is a much more enjoyable experience with the female officers :p

edit: as for your next :spyder: check out Ted's site. he has all of the production models made on them..some will be out of production but there is always ebay or the other knife forums that will have them for sale every once in awhile.

As far as teaching Law Enforcement Agents about concealment of dangerous weapons....It's the old Jester behind the collar or ladybug in the glove or the Delica wrapped in gauze attached to my neck like a wound dressing that gets them every time..... but they are learning real quick!..and FWIW...The first coursework even taught by the United States Military entitled "Knife Throwing" was taught a Fort Bennings Georgia....the Instructor walk into the classroom and the first words out of his mouth were: "Never throw your knife!" Then they proceeded in Knife Fighting Tactics coursework......once again don't get me wrong I love to throw things....I throw Tomahawks, Throwing Knives, Folders, Fixed Blades, Balisongs, Hatchets, Ten Penny Nails, Ice Picks, Darts, Sharpened Wooden Chopsticks in Bundles of twenty (great fun),Steel Chopsticks, Spears, Short Swords, Steel Balls, Razor sharp Coins and Kitchen Knives. While throwing is an accomplished impressive skill and lots of plain old fun, I still don't see any good tactical reason why someone should throw their weapon at someone else....I have learned by my intense studies in Shaolin Kung Fu that the Chinese even in ancient times never threw their weapons....The spear if thrusted or thrown was always caught at the very end for retention purposes...things like a rope dart or meteor ball were always attached to twenty feet of rope....for retention purposes, only in the late 1800's or early 1900's did Kung Fu Masters start to throw Razor sharp coins or darts which were not only easy to conceal under a sash or in a sleeve, but they were always dipped in fast acting poison...now there's a though.... Welcome to the Spyderco forum and thanx much for the interest in our knives and the time to communicate on our forum members.

Eric Remmen was the first that I know of to actually teach self defense with a Spyderco. His "Clipit defense course" (about 1990) was highly acclaimed. His skill was very good. He taught with two FRN Delica's (left and right pocket). Weak hand needs to be effective when strong hand is busy. Throwing the Delica was part of his training. He said it is hard on the knife, but when you are in defense of your life, any "trick" that works is good.

He used to teach with two pink Delica's. We dulled them up for him to use as trainers. As I remember, he was on the cover of "Fighting Knives" a number of years back when the magazine was still printing.

I guess we now have to start making whips?

My wife, Gail, plays with knives and whips. (and guns).

Very nice! Out of that list I've only thrown knives, folders, and kitchen knives. But razor sharp coins? Steel chopsticks? Steel balls? I have to add those to my collection!

I do like the Delica under the gauge. I was a police cadet for a short period of time. If we did that type of search, I defnitely would've missed those knives! Usually it was us cadets hiding the weapons and getting searched, but not a professional!


WHKENTO: I'll keep the Sharpmaker in mind! From that video you can tell I have no idea how to sharpen a machete. But my instructor's going to professionaly sharpen it which I'm very excited about!

DEFENESTRATE: Glad I inspired you to get into the sport of knife throwing! Can I recommend Cold Steel Knife Sure Flight Throwers? (Sorry, is there a Spyderco throwing knife that I should be aware of? Because if there are, I'll buy it!) The Cold Steel Throwers are very easy to throw but can wreck havoc on your wall if you have an indoor set up. I got mine on eBAY from "belote" at $7.00 a piece. Let me know if you have any questions on an indoor setup-- mine's evolved over the years.

TONYDAHOSE: Thank you for the website. I looked through all the knives, which look awesome by the way. The folders with the short blades look pretty cool, but I love the wave my Endura has. I like the black/green Endura USN. I think it may be my next Spyderco!

SAL: Whoa! Great information! I wish I could've taken Eric's class in 1990-- I would've been... 9 though. Haha. I do like the idea of training with the left hand. My right hand seems to get better at anything I do after practicing with the left! If Spyderco starts making whips, put me on the list for one! Your wife and me sounds like we'd get along very well! On my top 3 list of favorite weapons is my shotgun (Remington 870, 12 gauge).

Biomechanics is what people make of it. By definition it is the science of movement using some physics to calculate various forces (for example: torque) acting on a body (both animate or inanimate). It has application in sports, physical rehab, as well as in the car industry, the motion picture industry, and armed forces (army, navy, etc). It's an exciting science with a lot of new developments in the recent years. We get to use lots of cool, electrical gizmos for testing purposes. The application is literally endless.

Wow, looks like I’m arriving really late to this party. I sort of ignored this thread once it started to go downhill.

Xolette: Welcome and thanks for joining the group. I’m sorry to realize that abuse you were getting here on this forum got back to you personally. But, it sounds like you have a great attitude and that you’re adept at having a more or less civil discussion. If you like sharp things, I think you might like it here. Warning: Most of us are obsessed with Spydercos.

I think your video was great. It got me interested in tossing around a couple of cheap, lightweight throwers that I have. I must say it’s not as easy as you make it seems. If I try to throw at different distance (~6 ft instead of ~3 ft), I can’t hit the target to “save my life” I hear lightweight knives get a light squirrelly at a distance, so now I’m thinking about looking at some heavier throwers.

As far the whole issue of throwing a knife in self-defense … I prefer to throw people.

I may be wrong but it appears to me that Xolette can hold her own pretty well. As far as the knife throwing goes, while I don't advocate throwing your knife and I would probably never do it, I would hate to be on the receiving end of a knife throw by her.

I threw my poor Delica (Gen. III, VG-10, SE) countless times. :eek: It oftenly hit the target with the handles instead of the blade. And when it came with the blade, instead of the target I hit something else - like concrete or stone or something. :o
Guess what? It still works. It's all scratched and abused, but it still locks and cuts. I'd say it's a reliable knife :D

From the girl that made the video:

1) I do not routinely throw my folder. That video is the one and only time I’ve thrown it. I throw other knives of similar weight to get the same affect.

2) I did not say that throwing a knife in a life-threatening situation is the end all solution to any fight.

3) My weapons instructor (who also teaches cops knife defense) introduced me to Endura Wave. He taught me that if you ever want to use knife throwing in a real life application, you should be able to throw the knife that you carry (in which he carries 2 Spydercos for that purpose). That simple. And who really is going to carry a set of throwing knives anyway? I find it sad that one would limit their options in a fight by saying, "This knife isn't meant for throwing, therefore, I'll never throw it." You effectively lose out on an option that might mean you can close a distance instantly or have a quick distraction.

4) Whoever thinks throwing an edged weapon is useless in a fight, only has the right to speak if a) that person's been in a knife fight and b) has thrown a knife at an attacker and found it to be ineffective.

My weapons instructor (who has been in many knife fights) was at a pizza place that was held up by a guy with a shotgun. After the guy with the shotgun threatened a man’s wife, that man threw a steak knife into the guy’s eye. And guess what? Hold up instantly over. Imagine that, a situation where knife throwing worked.

5) This video was meant to be my simple review of a knife that I adore and to show what my instructor taught me-- that you can throw it. It was definitely not made for the following mentioned reasons:

a) An attempt to become famous
b) An attempt to appease men by showing a girl can like knives
c) A way to tell all the Spyderco enthusiasts what they should do with their knives
e) The pros and cons of knife throwing.
f) The one and only solution on how to effectively end a life-threatening situation

Honestly, it's a short, simple, 1 minute vid, not meant to change your life or to stir up your beliefs.

6) Can the two guys who gave me a 6 out of 10 on the hotness scale post up their pictures? I'll be happy to give you my hotness rating. :)
