Chinook 4

Post by v8r »

How about a new version of a old theme! I'm thinking High Hollow ground blade with a thin edge, swedge grind on the spine, CBL lock, stainless liners G10 scales (Digicam or Foliage green), a handle shape similar to the current design(jimping like the Manix2).154 CM or S30v, makes no difference to me.What do you guys think?

How about using the Chinook I blade profile w/swedge and full flat ground. A true folding Bowie knife.
Been packing at least two Spyderco knives a day since 1984

With the shape of the tip and a high hollow grind, what would a swedge add?

I think that high of a hollow grind would weaken the knife for it's designed MBC purpose. I'm much happier with the FFG.

Now a 5+ version? **** yes.

Josh you are probably right about the high hollow grind, but the original Chinook doesn't cut too shabby.Really the biggest dislike of the Chinook 1 is the lock and Tip down carry. :)

What do you mean biggest dislikes? I love tip down! :D

A thin high hollow grind would probably cut better then the current FFG (except maybe long slicing cuts) but wouldn't be as strong. The goal was a MBC knife and you don't want the edge chipping out on you.

I'd be in for one with a ATR thickness comp lock though. Or a CBBL.

As is the case with all collaboration models, I would imagine any changes to the Chinook would require the designer's blessing. Obviously, I can't speak for James Keating, but IIRC, the C2 and C3 were intended to move it closer to his vision of the knife, so am not sure all, or even any, of the changes proposed would appeal to him.

A caged ball lock would be better than the current lock I think.
