using a discontinued model...

#1

Post by BladeMaster »

Are any of you afraid to carry and use a discontinued <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>?

You know, are you afraid of scratching up or even losing the knife? Discontinued models are harder to replace then current models.

I have a few discontinued models, and I just can't bring myself to carrying them.

I have a few discontinued Spydies that I carry regularly, even an Ocelot proto. For me part of the pleasure of owning a knife is using it.

The only rare Spydie that I can't bring myself to use in case I lose / damage it is my Gary Blanchad Police.

Is that a <img src="http://spyderco.com/forum/spyder.gif"border=0> in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me ?

I'm a believer in using all my knives - why not enjoy them?

I have 2 discontinued models - a CoPilot and a Frank Centofante C25G.

yog is not the only one to carry discontinued <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>'s. I carry a lynx proto and a pink cricket everyday. Usually with a CF ladybug or a micarta jester. I use a G-10 harpy in the garden and the wife uses a pink delica. Some of them stay in the case though.

All the knives I like, use and carry all become discontinued: Calypso JR FRN, Wegner JR, Co-Pilot, my tricked-up Cricket with Tufram removed, Dyad Jr Micarta. Oh, I guess I have a Dragonfly, again modified, and my Meercat coming back from <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>. I carry them all, thrown in with keys, tools, coins, other miscelaneous stuff that scratches, dings and scuffs. It's reverse psychology - if I baby a knife, it falls and breaks a tip or gets lost, or something. If I treat it with respect, but no undo care, not worrying about it too much, they last longer and work better. You'll never retire off selling a knife, or even a few hundred knives - may as well enjoy, cut, scratch and live.

I purchased three Calypso JR after they were discontinued, carry two, one as backup in the event one gets lost. I fear more if I happen to misplace one and never got to actually use it. Better to use it then lose it. Then again there is always the chance to lose or break it if carrying.

I'm not afraid to carry any of my knives, even if they're discontinued. I am a little nervous about actually using them, though. That's why I bought two Calypso Jrs, one for use and one for my collection.

*Shudders*

I too bought a Calypso Jr., and it is my EDC as of the present. I had a close call with it the other day, when I was in the bathroom.
It seems that it must have gotten caught on my shirt and pulled out of my waistband. It came within 3 inches from going into the drink. *Shudders again* I will admit that I don't carry my "Q" or my Pink Cricket just for that reason. I don't really want to loose them. I can always replace a Ladybug or Spydercard, but when my Calypso almost goes in for a swim.......Argh!

With the exception of my Chinese Folders, all my regular carries are discontinued. They include grey and blue aluminium Centofantes, an aluminium Cricket, a CF Dragonfly and micarta and FRN Calypso Jrs. I get so much pleasure from carrying and using them, I would hate to put them away for display only.

The only one I have right now that I am shy about carring is my CF Dragonfly.

Use 'em. If a knife is a true one of a kind piece, then I would consider light usage. Unless it happens to be that gold-plated Worker prototype, go ahead and use it. No joy is gained by having them sit in a case.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

True, Sword and Shield!

I now limit my gunmetal blue Chinese Folder to my Sunday/formal knife. It works well for such "fancy" occasions.<img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I guess I am in the minority, but I have some that I just don't use. Yes, sadly they sit all day in my display case, begging to be taken out and put to work. The best they can hope for is to be lifted out and rubbed with a polishing cloth and loving hands. They also serve as models for the mediocre pictures I take. My large PE Calypso is lucky. I carry it and once in a while use it to cut garlic cloves. One of these days I hope to get another one that I can sentence to life in the case. Discontinued Spydies...some I just enjoy having.

I guess I wouldn't make it in many collector clubs! I only collect things I like and I use them because I like them. Although I can see the "pure" collector's view point. I measure the value of a <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> by the pleasure it brings me, not by its resale value. I enjoy them much more in my pocket and being used than I do in a display case.

Dude ~ To carry a discontinued <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> is like having a piece of history in your pocket.. Makes great conversational pieces over a coupla beers! *heh-heh!* <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> I carry my two-screw worker from time to time.. Half of my precious <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>s are discontinued models! And mostly agree that one should enjoy what he or she owns by using it! <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> *yeah!*
