"Hybrid" Police model...an idea.

#1

Post by Jeff/1911 »

Hi,

I've been thinking about this for awhile. How about an S/S Police model with ultra-thin G-10 scales attached on top of the stainless ones, thereby yielding the heft and perceived strength of the stainless Police model and the wonderful, smooth grippiness of G-10 while preserving the relative slimness of the S/S design.

So, whatya' think? I realize that it would likely never be produced, considering that the G-10 Police model has already come and gone but I do think that it would make for a neat and functional knife.

That would be cool I think.

If that would happen I probably wouldn't delay me getting a Police

Great idea, Jeff.

I'm a big fan of G-10 and sorely miss the G-10 Police.

Keep those ideas coming!

Spyderholic,

Well that's just it you see...

The G-10 police is/was a nice knife. However, I love the heft of the stainless model and prefer this over the G-10 version and it's just that it's a bit hard to grasp quickly from the pocket and seems to require a fair grip pressure to keep it in the hand once it's there.

I just figured that if the G-10 scales were laminated to stainless then they could perhaps be made very thin, and then not significantly add to the thickness of the "concept" knife. The thin profile is another trait of the s/s model that I've heard mentioned over and over as something people really like about it. The G-10 scales on the G-10 Police are quite thick (contributing to the overall thickness of the knife), and I assume they have to be as on one side of the G-10 Police, there is only G-10 material and nothing else so it must be somewhat thick for adequate strength.

I suppose that Kraton rubber inserts would address the grip issue (like on the Pro Grip stainless model) but they seem almost too sticky for my liking. I think that G-10 offers a great combination of grip and "limited slip" as a handle material.

And so, I'll continue to dream...Jeff/1911.

Not a bad idea, dude. I think a G-10 over SS would be sweet. You would probably have to get the G-10 as well as the SS "liners" to around 1/16" of an inch each, so that when you add them together, you get an 1/8" of an inch per handle. Add those together, and you get 1/4". Add a 1/8" blade, and you have a total of a ballpark of 3/8" of an inch. ( If you throw in Teflon washers, you would have to figure in .040 for either side. )
Most folding knives are anywhere from 3/8" to 1/2" thick. With a little bit of math, one could probably get a G-10 over SS handles to work fine.

This would be an AWESOME knife...if it ever happened. I'd definitely buy one or two.
Maybe a future forum knife?. The Police is a classic and it would be a fitting tribute.

How about a simpler design with liners instead of a G-10/SS "Oreo"? The G-10 Police was probably discontinued solely on its ATS-55 blade steel. I'd love to see the return of the Police with VG-10 and G-10 scales, even without the liners. Just remember, Spyderco's pricepoint policy means that most s are compromises. G-10 scales and VG-10 blade steel would make for a quite expensive knife as s go.

Also, producing a knife in several variations (G-10 and maybe AUS-8 or 10 as a pricepoint model, SS and VG-10 for elegance, and G-10/VG-10 as the absolute best for hard use) requires a lot of re-tooling between runs if the same machines are to be used, or more overhead, applied to all knives, in new machines to increase the number of lines that can be made at once. Considering that a 1200-piece run takes a while to sell, even with so many Spydernuts out there, having that many variations isn't good business sense.

Besides, Spyderco has built a reputation as one of the best makers of affordable work knives out there. Even if they lasted longer, if people had to pay upwards of a hundred and fifty dollars for the absolute best in quality and materials in any Spyderco, sales would drop off despite the still-great value of the knives. I know I couldn't afford to keep adding to my collection at my current rate. It's the old tradeoff between what you want, what your customers want, and what's practical for both.

Wise man say, forgiveness is divine. Remember that when your bites you!

G-10 Police with double steel liners; pitter-patter my poor ticker, what an excellent idea, so I'm not the only one with such devious thoughts, I'd get two, Pachucks

I appreciate hearing your thoughts about this concept; and the following described variations. Cheers, Jeff/1911.
