A Spydie in disguise?

So, I was perusing the Internet and found a picture of the new Benchmade 555 Mini-Griptilian. It's designed by the great Mel Pardue with a 2.9" 440C modified sheepsfoot blade.

That hole looks suspiciously familiar to me! <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

For that matter, so does the serrated edge pattern! <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

So, has Spyderco benefited from another licensing agreement with our brother-in-arms Benchmade or, is it just my imagination? Maybe I've been staring at Spydies for too long again but it seems like my eyes might be playing tricks on me.

You know, I believe you're right, Lsauog. I am constantly awed at the incredible number of knives that closely follow Spyderco's methods. The BM Griptilian and Mini-Griptilian are good examples of the positive influence that Spyderco has had on different knife companys. The Buck Odessey is another example, as is the Benchmade AFCK. It looks like Spyderco has invented a "better mousetrap." <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I think that Benchmade used to liscence the Spyderco round hole, but has gone to the new oval hole so they no longer have to pay Spyderco royalties.

Overall I think that the original Spyderco round hole is far superior to the oval. The small oval on the Mini-Griptillian works fine, but I find that the large oval on the Griptillian is wide enough that the tip of my thumb tries to bind in it a little when I try to 'fire' the blade open.

The Griptillians are very nifty knives, and are my favorites of the Benchmade line right now (the Mini-Gript. is the only Benchmade that is currently in my EDC rotation).

You're right, Revolvergeek.

Historically, I know that Spyderco's & Benchmade's paths have intersected a few times and, of course, they share some of the same "roots". However, I was unaware that Benchmade was able to continue to use the "Hole" as long as it was oval and not <b>round </b> . Hmm, seems like a legal side-step, to me.

<img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>Nut, as far as I'm concerned, I think Spyderco has invented the <b>best </b> mousetrap ever! <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Well, at least <b>this </b> mouse isn't going anywhere, any time soon! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
