Byrd Wings vs. Large Dyad?
Hi Y'all,
Apologies if someone has already done this and I missed it - it's a pretty obvious idea. If so maybe they could direct me to the thread. :o
Has anyone compared the new Byrd Wings to the Large Dyad, in ergonomics, blade cutting performance/edge geometry, etc.? The Wings looks like one helluva deal, and I see plenty of favorable reviews of it by itself. :)
Is there really anything besides the round holes and the collector's value that the large Dyad has that the Wings doesn't?
Thanks,
DOUG

I didn't post it here, but I did do such a comparison when I participated in a passaround on Bladeforums. This should get you to my review: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showt ... p?t=558191
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

Just Me Again
I have not read the post by Yab , but I can say that he is very knowable in regards to the knives of this subject . I have carried the C44 for years and love this knife . I can also say ( I am not a dealer but help friends ) and have sold several Wings to Hunters in my area , they love them ! When I show them the Dyad they understand where it came from and could care less . Young guys who need and use hard a two blade knife , makes me very happy . MG2
Byrd Wings to generate interest in the C-44
I have no doubt that the Byrd Wings model would be a great blade to start out for a young hunter/outdoorsman/fisherman and or hiker.
My love for the original C-44 and Micarta C-39 is well known among most of you here in Spyderville. I want a new version of Dyad so bad that I'm willing to implement a plan. Maybe if we could get many people interested in the less expensive Byrd Wings model then they would eventually want to get a premium double bladed knife ( hopefully :D ).
Like Manix Guy will tell you and if you experience what he has along with myself and Yab and a couple of others here in Spyderville >> then you know you have a super quality pocket knife >> actually 2 of them rolled into one.
Yes we could use the Byrd Wings model to re-kindle interest in the C-44 big Dyad>> that would be my plan anyway

C-44 Revival - I'd Buy One!!
Yes, I definitely agree with all of the above - the C-44 is awesome, and I too would love to see a new one, maybe a sprint run? I had one years ago, but I sold it.
I think it had a right-hand only pocket clip, and I'm left-handed, so maybe the new one could have a left/right/up/down clip, like the Byrd Wings. The original micarta is beautiful, G10 would be great, but FRN would help bring the cost down. If this existed, I would buy one in a heartbeat.
Until that happens, I'll keep my eyes peeled for an original C-44, and try out the Byrd Wings to help the cause! :D

Little if any dealer exposure
I don't mean to digress here but I think one of the reasons that the C-44 big Dyad has such a limited ( but growing) fan base is because it was another one of the Spyderco models that never made it to many of the dealers.
I used to do a lot of business with 2 dealers here in the Kansas City MO area but those 2 dealers were only at Gun Shows and Outdoor Shows. I finally did get one of my big Dyads from a husband/wife dealership here in KC but I did have to special order it from them. And then it took forever before they finally got it in.
Many Spyderco models never got the "dealer exposure" that many of the more popular Spyderco models did.
What we have to do to catapult the popularity of the big Dyad is to somehow actually get one into the hands of blade users. I again think that maybe the Byrd Wings might be the ticket.

Just Got My Wings
I just got my Byrd Wings today, and I am very impressed by the quality. :) The overall fit and finish is excellent, especially in this price range. Both blades are centered in the handle openings, the polishing and beveling on the handle looks perfect, the blades open and close very smoothly. There appear to be bronze bushings at the blade pivots. Another nice surprise was that both blades have top and bottom jimped choils. :) The only rough unfinished metal was on the back end of the blades, above where the liner lock surface is. The blade polishing is not as crisp and dead flat as with a :spyder: , it is somewhat rounded off on the edges and around the holes. The edges on the blades are ground perfectly, and the factory edge on the PE blade shaves hair off my arm. The construction is rock solid, and it feels quite good in the hand with a blade open. :)
I would call this a real bargain - I don't know how they do it for the price they're going for. It is made in China, but still!! I will still buy a Dyad when I come across one, but this is a really nice knife.

Spyderco quality has always fascinated me,and it seems like even the less expensive spydies seems like it should be worth a whole lot more.spiny norman wrote:I just got my Byrd Wings today, and I am very impressed by the quality. :) The overall fit and finish is excellent, especially in this price range.
