Lum Tanto Folder - G10 versus Titanium handle?

#1

Post by 4 s ter »

I would appreciate any opinions regarding the choice between G10 and titanium handles on the Lum Tanto Folder.

Thanks!

Dude ~ The Ti-Lum tanto is SWEEEEET! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> An excellent collector's piece if I may add! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> I agree with Sharp1 on the G-10 when it comes to hard use! It ROCKS! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

4 s ter, get the ti version.

In the land of knives, Spyderco is king.

My on-duty daily folder is rotated between a Tanto Sebenza and the Tanto Lum.
I Lost a Ti-Lum a while back and now have the G-10 version with black blade. The G-10 Lum is a hard use knife. The Ti- version is also but is much easier on the eyes.

Get the Ti - it's been discontinued. And as recoil said, it's "much easier on the eyes".
The G-10 should be available at least through this year, if not longer; but the Ti is disappearing fast.

David, imo the design of the Lum tanto's handle gives me a more than satisfactory grip on the knife despite the smooth surface of the ti. For sure the G-10 will give you additional traction. However, your choice may depend on how you will be using and carrying the knife.

If your most likely use of the knife requires an uncompromised grip, then maybe the G-10 version is the better choice. However, the G-10 will wear your pocket or waistband faster than the ti version. (For what it's worth: Spyderco seems to polish their G-10 very well and imo feels smoother than, say, Rekat's G-10 handles). If your use of the knife will be casual most of the time, the ti would slip in and out of your pocket more smoothly and if carried IWB will not abrade your skin or shirt (as much as G-10). For me, the knife spends more time in my pocket than in my hand so I choose accordingly.

They're both nice knives maybe you should get both and carry the one that matches your need for the day.

I've never seen a Lum in person. How "strong" would you rate it to be (G-10) version. Would you have any hesitations carrying it for MBC purposes? Pachucks

Thank you to everyone for the great advice. I ordered the Ti-Lum and picked it up this past weekend.

Up til now all of my Spyderco folders have been the lightweight/FRN models (Delica, Endura, Native, Matriarch, etc.) Compared to those the Ti-Lum is one solid folder and one with really impressive looks. Although it is almost the same size as the Endura it just looks bigger!

The fit and finish are flawless. Hair-popping sharp out of the box. The grinds are very even and symmetrical, even the interesting appleseed (convex) grinds of the tip. The lockup of the liner lock (my first) is tight with absolutely no blade play.

The titanium handle seems to be shaped to provide a good grip, even if not quite as good as the G10 might have been.

This has been my most expensive Spyderco purchase (to date) and an investment I'm glad to have made.

Thanks again for the advice!!

David
