Finally Made a Sheath for my Mule #1

#1

Post by CajunMike »

Well it took me a while but I finally made a leather sheath for my Mule #1. :) I made the handles shortly after I got the Mule but the leather work kind of scared me a bit. I'm rather new to leather working and I wanted to do a bit of research before I dove in.
Once I made up my mind to make the sheath it took me about two weeks to come up with a suitable design. I went through a lot of construction paper doing mock-ups. I'm rather pleased with how it came out but there is certainly room for improvement. If I did it again I would make it a little longer so that less of the handle was exposed.

Enough chit chat---on with the pictures.

That looks great! Looks like a great set up, and the colors look good together.

That's a nice sheath man. Can you tell me what the purpose of the leather strap is that goes around it? Is it for horizontal carry or what? Thanks man. I just don't know what it's for but I've seen it a lot. :)

I agree, the sheath looks great. Good work, Mike. :)

David, I believe the leather strap allows you to thread a belt through it to give you a 'cross draw' angle to the sheath (although I could be horribly wrong as I've never owned such a sheath :o ).

Lovely work Mike, I think the crossdraw sheath works really well with the Mule as its a dit of an awkward shape for a pouch sheath.

You are correct, it's for ambidextrous cross draw.

Thanks for the compliments! :D I really was a lot of fun to make.

Shagnasty,
The wood is actually Pink Ivory. Very hard and very dense. It polished up nicely.
Thanks for the compliment! :D

Mike,

Great looking sheath.
Can you tell me how you made the line that outlines the belt loop? Is that cut into the leather, or is it moulded in?

Thank you

Hi Hector,
The outline is cut with a stitching groover. Here's a Link to one from Tandy.

Mike

Hector, I think it was 6-7 oz. The hardest part of the whole project was getting a design that fit the knife and that I liked. I went through a lot of paper patterns before I settled on this shape. It really was a fun project.

I really appreciate all of the compliments! :D

Cheers,
Mike
