Help Sal Choose a New Scale Material for the Caly III

#1

Post by Bolster »

In the recent thread Which Other Handle Variations Would You Like to See in the Caly III?, posted by Manixworld, bolstered Caly IIIs with various handle materials were being discussed. Sal posted:

I'm probably speaking out of school, but I thought perhaps a poll could get things rolling...maybe we can help Sal with his decision of utmost importance. I've gone through the referenced thread to collect the various suggestions. My apologies if I have missed your favorite...if so, post it in the thread.

NOTE: You can vote for more than one. Also, post your preferred color/style in the thread. Thanks!

And in case you didn't see it, this is to get your juices flowing. It was created by a forumite several months ago, but I don't remember who. Will the creator of this fine artwork speak up? You deserve a meritorious commendation.

How about BASALT?

#4

Post by TR Graham »

All of the choices are very nice but, lets face it - they have all been done before - either by Spyderco or by other knife makers.

How about a completely new (well, to this country anyway) material that has not, to the best of my knowledge, been used before on knives?

I'm talking about BASALT CONTINUOUS FILAMENT, otherwise known as BASALT FIBER.

Some particulars :
It is a man-made fiber produced from melted Basalt rock.
It is produced by methods similar to fiberglass production.
Its tensile strength is in between e-glass and carbon fiber.
It has a heat resistance in excess of asbestos, without the health risks.
It does not conduct electricity.
It has a very high resistance to acids or alkali.
It is cheaper than carbon fiber.
It can be used in any application that fiberglass or carbon fiber is used.
It has a beautiful coppery-gold color.

So where did this stuff come from, and why haven't we heard about it before? Well, it was developed in communist Russia as a secret "black" program for military applications such as ICBM missile nosecones and blast shields.

I've seen and handled the stuff. The rifle company I work for is thinking about using it as a stock material. I think it has potential as a very high tech scale material. It certainly would put Spyderco on the cutting edge as far as handle materials are concerned.

So Sal, how about a REAL "Rock Lobster"? How about a "Rock Calypso", eh? What do think, gents?

Interesting! This stuff? Made of volcanic lava?

Depends on the weave. Per yard weight, basalt fiber is slightly heavier than fiberglass.
It is rock after all..... :)

I want something of white color. Durable materials are prefered as long as they can come in that color. Maybe something like the polished G-10 scale Benchmade did on thier Snody fixed, for example? I can't remember the model name :o

Nice design, but I would get rid of clip.
I voted for Bone( prefer jigged bone), but will be happy with wood, micarta (not white. IMHO, white is good only for safe queens) or polished G10.
What about Kopa style bolsters without clip?

Jigged bone, preferably the same color and pattern as that on the recent Kopa and early jigged bone Kiwis. Reasonable inexpensive, not offensive to any but the most fanatic PETAphiles. Depending on how the "flexible" the maker is, perhaps arrangements could be made for some to be left without scales for those of us "whose tastes run to the exotic".

I've already spoken of my preference to Micarta (Black is my preference, but white would be cool, as well), as an homage to the Big Calypso; but that Basalt Fiber looks pretty cool. :D

Okay, SS bolsters with Micarta. I would not mind a variety of handle colors in G10 for the Caly3.

I really liked the look of the proto white micarta Goddard jr., but that knife is a little too right-handed for my tastes. I'd love to see a white micarta Caly III and I'd never complain about some bolsters.

I like the idea of jigged bone, but for some reason the visual of bolsters on the Caly 3 just doesn't do it for me, and bone without bolsters seems odd. Dunno, have to mull it over some more.

Totally unrealistic/living in a dream-world choice would be Timascus.

Practical choice would be nice micarta, maybe dark tan.
