Observations about my CF Dragonfly

#1

Post by Kahz »

Hello all,

I am writing these observations as just that, observations, so no one get the idea that I am about to give up my CF Dragonfly. *looking suspiciously over at SpyderNut* This said, here are a few observations I have made about carrying this little knife:

1. I admit I was not an advocate of flat grind before this little knife, now I am a true convert and I love the look of this kind of blade over the hollow grind. Pure aesthetic preference, not practical.

2. There is only (apparently) one liner next to the back scale (where the clip is located), the front scale has no liner, so the knife tends to look asymmetrical when seen from the top (nothing wrong with this, I like Picasso art, after all ). Why is this? Also, someone educate me as to the mechanism on this little knife. I have an older catalog here, and I am looking at the pictures, so I assume it's a front lock rather than a compression lock, is this so?

3. I like the tip down variation, other than the JD Smith I used to own (yes, you heard that right, this knife is no longer in my possession), and the Cricket, this is the only other one I carry tip down. The Q is the most versatile, of course, but I do not carry it around anymore.

4. The lanyard hole could have used some "rounding up", it looks "unfinished" for some reason (my perception, of course), but I don't care, this does not interfere with the performance of the knife.

5. I really was not interested at all in the Dragonfly design before owning this one. I can now see how mistaken I was in my perception, this is a very pretty little knife, very well designed, comfortable to use, very "uninitiated" friendly , an overall winner.

So, anyone who can help me with my questions in point 2, I'd appreciate your input.

Kahz

Kahz...
It is a lockback, released by pressing down on the release. The compression lock as I understand it is released by pushing the liner to the side, just like a linerlock.

And yes, all of the CF Dragonflies I have seen and pictures I've viewed show asymetrical lanyard liner edges. I improved mine by reaming it with a non-sharp something or other(memory is the 1st thing to go, or is it 2nd?)

And you show good taste in appreciating the flatground blade. Enjoy the knife. Its a keeper.

Oh! Did someone say something about a CF Dragonfly? Ahhh, it was Kahz.

*Winks at Kahz*

Hmmm, I can't offer much help with question #2, but if you should, for any reason, ever have any second thoughts about the 'fly, just give ole' Spydernut a jingle!

BTW, I tried to get a LTW Dragonfly for my brother for Christmas, but the dealer was all sold out. It seems like a sweet knife design.

Cheers!

Hi Kahz,

Many Spydies with micarta, CF, or G10 scales have a single liner to make the clip screws more secure. These materials don't need a liner for stiffness but there is some concern that they may not have sufficient mechanical strength to support the fine threads of the clip screws. Some other examples off the top of my head are the G10 Standard and Harpy and G10 Police. I think even the CF Civilian has only one liner although I may be mistaken on that one.

got nothing to do witht he topic but looking at chinooks photos the CF dragonfly looks REMARKABLY like a calypso jr. in fact they could well be related. how cool would a carbon fibre re-run of the calypso jr. be? i'll bet everyone would buy it THIS time round

Ruxton,

You are completely right , check out this thread I started a couple of days back:

http://www.spyderco.com/forum/topic.asp ... lse&S=True

Everyone, thanks for your replies, I really like this knife and I know this one is a keeper, Chinook. I gave up my JD Smith to a friend who needed it more than I do at the time, a favor I owed him from long ago. I know I can always get another knife as nice as that one (fortunately, Spyderco will be around for a looooong time, even if that particular model may not), but another friend like that, hard to come by. Plus, a Spyderco is an excellent gift for someone special, quality for quality.

Hey Ruxton.
So it was you keeping me awake last night
Talk about spooky coincidences, I couldn't get to sleep until 4.30 last night (this morning), went to bed at 12.00, but there wasn't a drop of sleep in me.

Even came and checked this board at about 4.00 I was so bored.

Kahz,

BTW I forgot to congratulate you before on your conversion to flat ground blades. Like black olives and very dry white wine, they are an aquired taste but once you have it there is no turning back. Now you've been bitten you will soon find that you just can't live without a Chinese Folder, the ultimate flat ground Spydie .

Clay,

Oh, your olives and wine analogy worked wonders. I am afraid I am a convert... I will explain more in a few days *looking around worriedly for Samo*, plus, that folder is looking rather tasty.

The book is next, the book is next, the book is next... no more blades now, the book is next...

more boredom induced tinkering... not as sophisticated as a CF calypso jr but still desireable, from the top...
Harpy with FRN calypso Jr handle - my fave blade with my fave handle
Harpy without the annoying holes in the side - nicer IMHO
and last but not least a harpy with handles of 24k gold, with a black spydie bug near the bottom - was gonna do the bug in ruby but couldn't be bothered (its 4:53am)
MAT
(remember ppl NOT REAL!)

edit - sorry to just mercilessly hijack your topic Kahz, i'll send u a solid gold harpy as compensation (when i win the lottery of course...)
