Very disapointed

Yah, so after a week with my Calypso Jr.Lightweight. It has developed up and down blade-play in the open position.

I'm not too sure what to think of Spyderco now, after one of their most raved about models turns out to be a shotty product.

Minimarc,

Bro, I think you need a little time to cool off. I also believe that you shouldn't downplay Spyderco or its products just because your knife developed some play between the blade and handle. Geez! Cut them some slack, will ya? The motto at Spyderco is "Pobodys Nerfect." That means that everyone occasionlly makes mistakes. I know that when you get a new knife you expect it to be "perfect", but sometimes that doesn't always happen. One thing I'll add: Spyderco is a rare company, in that it does its best to help its customers with their problems. If you have had any experience with other knife companies out there, you would realize how great Spyderco customer response is. I don't mean to 'jump down your throat', but I don't think its neccessary to throw the baby out with the water either.

Good luck with getting you knife fixed.

No,I did not use it for any hard cutting; the hardest would be cardboard, string, and little ties on packages.

The play didn't start until about a week of using it, but the blade could always move right and left about 2-3 mm in the closed position.

If I do send it in to the spyderco place, won't I have to pay shipping? if so I'd rather just return it

Maybe you should return it, but you'll never know how good a Spyderco can be then. I have had my Calypso Jr for over two years. Carry it quite often. Use it for just about everything and I have never had a problem with it. I'll admit that not all my Spydercos are perfect. But I send them to the warranty dept and they get fixed and return just as good or better than new. So you return it. Of course this is just my opinion.

Minimarc, Easy, mate. Your Calypso may be what's called a
"manufacturing variance" In other words of the many mass
produced pieces one may not be just right. Syperco is a good
company that has done wonders to improve knivesmin general
for ALL of us. If the blade has up / down movement the lock
may be at fault and the knife may be unsafe. SEND IT BACK
for warranty service. You are the proud owner of one heck of
a knife when it's adjusted correctly.

I know its disappointing to have to send a new knife back for warranty work - it happened to me once also. I'm sure though that you won't be disappointed by Spyderco's customer service!

I believe a certain amount of side to side movement when closed is normal on the Calypso Jnr Lwt, but certainly not when open, and certainly no vertical play when open.

I've never had a duff Spyderco, and I have several (Spyderco's, not duff knives <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> ), but it does sound as though you might have a duff one.

Give Spyderco Warrent and Repair a call. I've delt with them on a couple matters (things so slight I would be embarrised to mention them), but each time they ware very helpful and either altered the piece or replaced the item.

I'm not putting down spyderco... in fact, my plan is to order myself a new spydie (probably the same one) if I can return the other one

but it is kinda discouraging, as this is my first real knife
