Brass-lined CoPilot

#1

Post by The CoPilot »

Could somebody post some pics of what an early brass-lined CoPilot looks like? I've read about them, but never seen one. Sounds like it would be a pretty neat looking Spydie. Anyone know why the decision was made is quit making them with the brass liners and go to the full steel? Cost maybe?

Here's an old thread I dug up on brass-lined CoPilots. Still no pics of one to show you all, though:

I've never handled one, but have seen photos. From what I could tell, they really don't look any different from the later, all stainless handled versions, unless you look at the inner edge and inside surface of the handle. Then you can see the brass.

I have both, as the Deacon says, I don't notice any difference unless you look at the inside surface. Sorry I don't have a pic to post.

I'll try to get a few pics uploaded of what one of these brass-lined CoPilots looks like. I finally managed to score a SE one on eBay recently for a whopping $31 :D

Will try to post some close up shots of the liners once it arrives.

sal wrote:It was, as mentioned, an early piece and only a short run of 1200 were made. Then we went to the all stainless version which was disco'd a couple of years ago.
Sal:

Did all 1200 of the brass-lined CoPilots have a serrated edge, or were some made with plain edge also?

Would this one be considered to be right handed?

Yep, any serrated Spyderco with the clip on the right side of the handle, amd the "pretty" side of the serrations on the left side of the blade would be considered right handed. Nice catch by the way. After you receive it, please do post some good photos showing the liners for the benefit of those among us who have never had one in their hands.

Sal:

What blade steel were you using when these brass-lined CoPilots came out? Was it GIN-1?

Kicking this one back "to the top", Sal, for when you get back.

FWIW, I have two Serene embellished Co-Pilots, one is marked G-2 and the other GIN-1. Based on them, I would guess the earlier ones used GIN-1 as well. The brass liners do add a touch of class, if it were PE, I'd be jealous. :o :D

You mean that you haven't had a taste of the SE "kool aid", Paul? :D :D I was a little skeptical of serrated edges too until I finally got one. Now I love them as much or more than PEs.

Who (or what) was Serene who did the embelishment on the CoPilot handles? I've seen a couple of knives like this but don't have a clue what the story on them is.

If it can't be sharpened on a flat stone, I don't want it in my pocket. ;) :D

As for Serene, my understanding is they are (or were) a small outfit that embellished knives, something like Santa Fe Stoneworks and the Yellowhorse family. Their stuff, at least what I've seen of it, tends to be fairly simple, single material bone and stag overlays mostly. If Sal chimes in on this to either confirm or correct my assumption, perhaps he can offer more.

I've seen some Serene Workers with scales that were (inlayed/onlayed?) with an intricate sterling silver basket weave pattern. It looked pretty fancy, and I think I heard of one that was done in gold as well. ;)

I suspect that you are probably right, Paul. Seems like many of the knives in production in 1987 had GIN-1 blades.
