SS or G-10 police?
I want to get a police, but I am not sure which one to get. I had a SS but got impatient with it because it was still stiff and returned it. Would a G-10 have a smoother action right off? And are they the same size in all dimentions- handle width?

Good Morning mschwoeb,
I too have a SS Police and find that the blade is also stiff. I've tried different lubes but nothing seems to help. If I let it go for too long, I get a mild squeaking sound from the action while opening slowly.
I am also in the market for a G-10 Police. As far as I know, the dimensions are the same as the SS but I'm not 100% sure. And, obviously, there's the weight difference. Don't know if you've considered a Military instead, but I'm leaning more towards a SpyderEdged Military instead of a Police. Seems like it's more of a "heavy-duty" knife.

For me, the G-10 is a slam dunk, but I'm a big fan of the G-10 material as it is lighter and has a better grip.
However, knives are intensely personal. Some people prefer a knife with heft. Also SS is cool looking.
I should point out that the G-10 Police is being discontinued.
I also tend to agree with the writer who recommended the Military. The Millie is a great handling, but amazingly light tool. Like the Police, the Military has great lines. The Millie has a G-10 handle material, but is 1/8th inch shorter than the Police. The shorter blade length may avoid legal issues in some jurisdictions.
Under any circumstance, I strongly recommend that you find a good knife shop and handle the knife. You're spending a lot of money (and worth every penny I might add), but you should invest some time in order to get the right knife.
One way or the other, you pay for your tools!

The s/s model is slimmer, heavier, slippery-er, more beautiful (to me) and has a hollow ground blade as opposed to the flat ground blade of the G-10 version. They really are quite different, so if possible you should handle both.
Considering that the G-10 version has just hit the "discontinued" list, and you have already tried an s/s model maybe you should go with the G-10 model at this time. If you like, you could always get an s/s model later on if you decide you want to, as they are still a current production item. Here are pictures of both, in case you don't have them.
Good luck with your decision, Jeff/1911.

Just a couple of questions that this thread brought to mind.... I dont mean to sway the topic.
Lsaulog mentioned that the Military seems to be more a heavy duty knife... I was wondering does it have a thicker blade? What is it that makes it seem more heavy duty than the Police.
Second, Do the knives with G-10 handles have a steel/alum./ti liner or is the complete handel made souly of the G-10 material?? I was at a gun show last weekend and finally decided to purchase my first Spydie... I looked aroudn and compaired prices and 'feel' and i loved the police, but the Delica just seemed more practical for an EDC knife...BUT there was a police model that seemed to have G-10 or maby even Micarta scales on a steel liners... I LOVED it... but the price was'nt too favorable for my current budget (130$). Sorry if this is elementary questions.. but i havent had a chance to have hands on expierence with too many of the spidies.. and i KNOW im going to buy more.. just trying to decide where to go from here..

I like the hollow ground Police blade better than the flat ground--the former seems sturdier all the way to the point. Except for a temporary manufacturing error where some hollow ground serrated blades were installed on the G-10 version (according to Sal)the hollow ground is only available with the stainless steel handle. As I have mentioned in previous posts, I feel the ss handled Police is smoother to insert and extract from your pocket or waistband--with less wear on the material--than the G-10 version. In response to another question asked, my experience is that the ss Police does become smoother opening with use and occassional lubrication.
The Military IMO appears to be "heavy-duty" because of its wider blade and pronounced belly. Its liner lock is nested into the G-10 (a really amazing manufacturing feat). It is very lightweight for its size. Some people don't care for the blade-to-handle ratio; I prefer the ATS 34 blade to the 440V. Obviously, it's these subjective preferences that make knife purchasing and collecting fun.

Toothed,
Following my recent experiences with ATS-34 steel in the Wegner family, I would really like to get an early Military using this steel...it's absolutely fabulous in the Wegner.
Anybody want to trade an earlier version ATS-34 bladed, plain edge Military for my one-year old, diamond engraved, plain edge CPM-440V model? Here is where a picture of mine may be viewed:

Okay can't write an essay on this one (got a 10 page paper due tomorrow on the IMF, oh joy). I have held the SS police and the Military. I seem to remember the Military being somewhat slimmer, but I could be wrong, I am just saying that by feel. It is much lighter. The wear issue is true, already my pants are getting a tad worn were the knife touches the pants, but I am willing to take that for the lighter weight. I love the CPM 440V steal. The blade design I also like, belly and just the strength of it. Also, liner lock and a lager spyder hole. The knife carries well in my pocket, but then this is all personal opinion, and I guess I am not much help with the two police models. Sorry if this causes more trouble.

The G-10 version is discontinued because it wasn't selling well enough. I have handled both versions and the fact I own two SS-handled Police models and no G-10 version speaks for itself. I like and own many G-10 handled knives, and I do like flat-ground blades, but for myself, I like the SS Police's blade grind better for this knife. The SS Police is thinner but heavier than the Military. But IMO this relative heaviness is a non-issue because to me it still feels fairly light yet hefty.
