Lignum ZDP CJ

Post by STR »

I am just about Lignumed out about now. :D Hopefully this is the last one for a while. Its on to some Emerson knives next which is a bit of a change of pace.

Anyway, this one is finally up and on the way home. Had a hold up for a bit waiting on supplies but once it all arrived I got back after it in the shop.

Turned out nice I think. Pics don't do it justice though.

Thanks for looking.

Very nice. Pardon an ignorant question, STR, but I am guessing you had to create new liners and a backspacer out of aluminum? Or what did you have to do, to convert from an FRN handle? Thanks---

Yes, I have to at the least make a brand new spacer/spring holder for the rear of the of the folder whenever I am rebuilding an FRN (fiberglass reinforced nylon) knife for a member.

I've used aluminum on some. It works fine if you pin it on the upper lip so it does not shear from the spring pressure but when the upper lip is so thin and too small to pin its necessary to use something capable of standing up to the spring tension so I use titanium on those. Even with titanium I pin the upper lip whenever possible because I just feel better about it when its pinned in place to help keep the spring under control. But in my testing the ti seems to be significantly stronger than even the strongest springs.

The trick is to make it taper so its nice and wide or thick in the back on the really thin ones. The Jess Horn model and ones like the Kopa and others I've worked on are sometimes very thin. On others like the Tasman Salt seen here you can really beef them up because the blade is no where near touching it when its closed unlike other models. Its also important to not create any stress risers or sharp square cut or score marks on it because that is where it will shear. You use a thin kerf cut off disc with rounded edges to make the stopping points of your spring slot all rounded off and not squared off in the corners.

You can see a pinned and non pinned spring holder here in these two pics.

Liners are ok to add and certainly work but add some weight usually. I've made just as many without liners using just G10 or just Micarta by itself and these have tested out fine for me. In fact two I have here that I often use and carry for myself are made this way. They are nice and light, thin and easily used much like the FRN folders but thought to be a step up by many. Personally I never had much against FRN as far as its ability. I wish it looked a little less like plastic though.
