Samo's Great Adventure...?

#1

Post by Gary »

Hey Samo,

It's been a month (posted 10/11) since you told us about your expedition to the upper reaches of a river at the Malaysian-Indonesia border in East Malaysia..

Any new expeditions since then? Given away any more knives? Wer'll wait to hear..

Howdy Gary,

Thanks for the kind words.. Been at rest recovering from a bad nasal infection.. The East Malaysian project was this year's main highlight... There has been several other smaller offroad trips, but we hardly engaged any local or indigenous folks as our guides... The next biggie, is a oddessey to central Mongolia in June 2002! Hope to pack some spydies on this one!

Wow, Mongolia! The most "exotic" adventure I've had was in Central and Southern Mexico while working as a student archaeologist...

I need to go to your side of the world soon. Maybe for 2003, so keep your fingers crossed. Please keep us updated on your latest adventures _all the time_.

Get well soon!

Thanks Kahz!
Mongolia's gonna be one tough cookie! One-third of the trip will be on four-wheel drive while the rest are on horseback.. Hey, if you are heading towards Southeast Asia, do drop me a line! I'll be glad to show you around Malaysia..

Samo,

Thanks, I will! I am hoping to be able to visit Kuala Lumpur soon. An ex-student of mine was there and in Singapore in 1999 and he told me the most amazing stories, so I know I have to go.

I am also planning a trip to India and Nepal for 2003 (was going to be Egypt, but that will have to wait). One of my best friends is from Bangalore, so he wants to show us (the husband and myself) around his area, then drive up north all the way to the Himalayas!!!! I can't wait!

Hey, don't worry about the horse back ride, I survived a many hour ride on donkey in Southern Mexico, and about an hour ride on Camel in Morocco. Horses are much better "designed" for human rumps, LOL!

Much obliged Kahz...
To those who are new to Malaysia, here's a map.. Check out the guy's tattoo (second on left), these are Iban [ee`-ban] people, the best wilderness trackers I've came across..

I love the squid season! That's when I go jigging for these large calamaries from April-June at the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia!

pix 1 - that's a large squid or sotong [sorr-thong] as they are called in Malay
pix 2 - Good catch : a parrotfish landed near a reef

Kewl!!!!

I know I will have to "island-hop" all the way up to India, LOL! That's what my ex-student did, he island hopped in Asia for over a month, got to visit several interesting parts, islands and in the continental areas as well, and brought back a bunch of cool photos. I may need at least two months to vacation, I wonder what my pocket will say, LOL!

What I have checked is that it's not extremely expensive once you get there, but the air fare may be the highest cost. Any ideas or thoughts about this, Samo?

This is a Spyderco Forum, right? You may contact me to my e-mail address if you wish, unless Forumites don't mind traveling tips.

Island hop? Whoah! That'll have to be well managed! I met a fellow traveller from Oregon while on assignment to Thailand some time ago. This guy packed an old blue-handled Delica which came with a plastic clip.. Traded plenty of travel tales.. Said he came in from India through Bangladesh and Burma and had the Delica as a faithful companion! Really COOL!

Thanks for the update Samo. Your adventures are always interesting... and for those that may not think it belongs in a knife forum, nice reference to the Delica...

Looking forward toward hearing about your Mongolia trip..

Samo, Thanks for sharing the adventure with us. Mongolia! I am so envious! I grew up reading the stories of Roy Chapman Andrews and his travels in Mongolia. We will expect pictures when you return. Peace go with you and bring you safe home.

Wow, great pics Samo!

It's always refreshing to hear of your new travels. I admire your adventurous spirit!

My biggest adventure in suburbia is usually wrestling with the lawnmower to get it started!

I hope you feel better soon.

Hope for the best. Be prepared for the worst. You'll never be disappointed.

Thanks for the well-wishes guys!
This forum is a great place! Well, Mongolia is my biggest project to date.. It'll cost somewhere between US$5,000 - US$15,000 to get a team beyond the Gobi desert.. Everything had to be seamlessly planned... Hmmm speaking about expeditions, one of the most interesting way to get around is barter-trading... I've attached a pix of a "dukuk", [doo-kwock] a traditional Iban knife which I've traded with an Endura and its thermoplastic neck sheath.... If you do a bit of homework, the Iban, largest ethnic group among the East Malaysian Dayaks were reputable head-hunters of the past..

Dude, all you have to do, is to reduce the pixel size on photoshop or other image editing software.. keep it below 300 pixels and you are fine!

Hey Kahz! Travelling around and about Malaysia is reasonably cheap! Believe me!
Gary ~ Thanks for the kind words dude!
