Spydie Baby Boom

#1

Post by chinook »

We finally got rain here last week, about 6 inches over a few days and so I holed up and went Spydie cyber-shopping. Between ebay and the "trading/for sale" forums I bought/traded/won 6 knives. Four of them have arrived. Waiting for my SS Baby Horn and my 2nd Calypso PE(love that knife)

All of them are bright, tight and the price was right.

Now I'm praying for more rain.

Excellent picture... a better looking quartet than the Beatles! I didn't know rainy days were so good. I'm starting my rain dance now.

Chinook,

I'm very envious of the blue Centofante Jr. I had a chance to buy one from James Mattis and turned it up. I have a grey one with black insert and I've decided that it is my absolute favourite EDC, even more so than the Calypso Jr. The blade shape is perfect for "gentleman's" tasks and that thin flat ground blade cuts like a scalpel. I had a G10 model but I found the extra lock too much of a nuisance. It kept getting engaged when the knife was in my pocket and stopping the blade from opening properly. I must keep my eye out for another aluminium one. There's rain forecast for the weekend so I might be lucky .

Beatles? Is that one of the new bugs from
Spyderco in the 2002 catalog?

Win? I haven't won anything since my wife's hand in marraige 20 yrs ago.

"Bee-oo-tee-fool!" Strange you should say that, Kahz. The same thing my wife yelled. (with the emphasis on the last sylable.)

Hi Clay
The blue is very nice. The guy I got it from had carried it butt not used it. I had to adjust the pivot a bit, lube and then cycle it a few dozen times and now it is very smooth. It is very grippy on its colored aluminum surface, much more than the gray w/green insert one I have. Very handy size and so slim in the pocket, you hardly notice it when sliding your hand in past it.
The SecureLok on the Centofante II doesn't stop it from opening, only closing. One of mine engages way too easily and I think I'll send it in to see if Spyderco can get it to actuate more positively.

"....turned it up..." ??? You guys really are upside down aren't you. LOL

I found that, if the slide got moved slightly when the knife was closed, it would prevent the blade from opening fully. I think the SecurLok was totally superfluous on this knfe anyway.

I think I probably meant to say turned it down, but I had a rush of blood to the head. Gravity will do that to you .

I haven't handled a Renegade since my mate Ferret had a couple, and I'd forgotten just how nice they are. Something else to add to the wish list.

Chinook,

I am confused, you said:

"Win? I haven't won anything since my wife's hand in marraige 20 yrs ago.

"Bee-oo-tee-fool!" Strange you should say that, Kahz. The same thing my wife yelled. (with the emphasis on the last sylable.)"

So, did your wife yell this when she saw the knives or when she married you 20 years ago??

BTW, my emphasis was on the second syllable, but your wife has good taste in words, tell her I say "HOLA!". I will freely assume that she did not make an emphasis on the last syllable on purpose. I only emphasized my Mexican accent with this spelling of the word, but I do mean "beautiful" knives.

Don't forget to post a pic of those two other knives...

Kinda personal preference. Butt I like the plainedge G10 version a lot for everyday use. The aluminum are nice for variety. And I think you will like the Renegade, butt don't open it quickly in polite company.

Kahz...
My bad. She was actually saying "Be you a fool?"

Here is why I want the larger fillet knife

Ah, now that's a big fish!!!!

How did you cook it? Not that I will ever remember, I don't cook, that's why I have my husband. He's the cook.

If you post a recipe, though, I'll make sure he gets it. Any particular knife you use or prefer to gut fish?

Kahz...¡Hola!

That's about the fastest response I ever got from a woman

I'll try to give my spin on care and preservation of salmon this evening. I am out the door, to a Mexican restaurant down the coast. They got a buffet with great chili verde and chicken chimichanga burritos and rellenos and build your own tacos/tostadas and fresh hot chips and salsa. Maybe even a margarita to wash it all down.

That was a great buffet.

Kahz...
Salmon are generally too big to eat at one sitting so you must preserve them some way. I have usually frozen some fillets and smoked the rest after a fresh barbecue dinner of course. I like it pretty simple, butter basted with lemon pepper, seasoned salt, garlic powder maybe. tried it with a terriyaki glaze last time with a bit of habanero pepper sauce added, indirect heat on a gas grill under a hood shaped from heavyduty aluminum foil. (delicious) Just learned how to can them this year, so we have a stock of that for the winter.

I find most any medium/large Spydie fine for gutting/definning/beheading them at the cleaning station, butt the Moran is what I ended up the season with in my ditty bag. (easy cleanup, grippy handle) Filleting is a different story. I do that at home in the garage where I have a stainless sink and cutting board. I use a Gerber Coho, a discontinued, butt XLNT knife. Just need a bigger one for the larger fish(over 20 pounds) I hope the new Spyderco Fillet knife comes with a blade over 6 inches.

Chinook,

Glad you enjoyed that buffet. I am making sure my cook husband gets this. Also, I am making sure he considers those nice knives. We just bought a set of Chicago Cutlery knives for our kitchen, but there's never enough of those to go around, so Spyderco is definitely the next option.

Tonight it's our "party downtown" night, but I believe he might be cooking catfish tomorrow. I have no idea what he will put on it, but I think I saw capers in the pantry...

Stay sharp!

Well
Its been raining again and I got nothing better to do after clearing the gutters and drains than cruising ebay/BF for more Spydies.

These came in the last few days.

Chinook,

We've had wild storms with gail force winds and driving rain all week. I keep looking in the gutters but all I can find are leaves and dead birds, there's not a single Spydie to be found. I've heard of it raining cats and dogs and even fish, but what sort of weather patterns do you get that causes it to rain Spydies .

BTW those aluminium Crickets were a great find. Even my wife thinks mine is the nicest knife I own.

Chinook,

I'm drooling...

Not sure if it's more because of the beautiful knives you've recently acquired, or the description of the Mexican feast you enjoyed, coupled with your salmon recipes. Anyway, I'm sure enjoying your descriptions.

Is that serrated, black-blade, early Military one that uses ATS-34 for blade steel?
