Sprint Runs
Sprint Runs
How / where can I find out what sprint runs are coming out ?
For instance, I didn't see anything on the Sypderco catalog website about upcoming ZDP-189offerings, and only found out about them after the people who pre-ordered the Caly Jr's started to receive shipments. I also saw a recent post about a ZDP Native, but don't see anything on the press-releases page, or New Graham's website, etc. How do I order one ?
Is there a list of what sprint runs are currently planned somewhere ?
Thanks.

There is a sprint run catalog under the main catalog pdf. Sometimes a sprint will occur that isn't in the catalog. It may be a Sprint that was delayed from the year before or seem to come out of no where. The best advise is to follow the forums daily.
As far as ordering...well that is where the Sprinting comes into play as you sprint from one dealer to the next trying to find out who has what you want. Since Sprints are limited, sometimes a favorite dealer either sells out fast or didn't get as many as they had hoped (a dealer might order 200 out of a 400 Sprint, obviously they won't get that many because Spyderco tries to spread the wealth to all the dealers as best they can) :)

Follow the mushin, but pay it no heed.

No, I think he's just confusing the upcoming CPM-125V Native Sprint.uhiforgot wrote:'Scuse me!? Did I miss something???

As for the black FRN ZDP-189 Caly Jr., that isn't technically a Sprint, just a run made for a specific distributor.
To be honest, the best way to keep up with current or upcoming sprints is really just to spend time browsing the forums here. :)
Yeah... Me too... But what is it special about 125V??

If memory serves me proper, it tests amazingly high on the CATRA* scale (for wear and abrasion resistance) and might be up in the hardness range of ZDP. Crucible's take on the new "supersteel" market, although I have yet to see or even hear of a knife made from this elusive stock.psimonl wrote:Yeah... Me too... But what is it special about 125V??

*Thanks again to thombrogan for reminding me of the name of the scale

Oops. It was the 125V Native I was thinking of. Sorry for the mistake.
Here is the CATRA (Edge retention data) that Sypderco that someone posted:
Number of cuts made to test depth on test tiles using a test pressure setting:
440C 360-400
VG10 500-510
S30V 550-580
S90V 750
ZDP-189 750
S125V 1200
Does anyone know 125V's typical hardness and if it can be sharpened without special equipment ? I imagine with this kind of abrasion resistance that fine-grit diamonds would be best. Has anyone found any that are in the 4000 to 8000 grit range ?

Hi John,
We generally make up a flyer a few months before production is completed. We don't advertise heavily or put them in the catalog because they are short runs.
In addition to our Kopa series (600 pcs per handle material), we have sprints in the works for;
Chinese folder in ZDP-189.
Micro Dyad in jigged bone (VG-10).
We've been working on a CPM-125V Native, but Crucible is still working on the steel. It's one of those "impossible" steels and my hat is off to Crucible for even trying.
I'm also considering making "steel mules" in short runs for the steel junkies.
We're currently looking at a number of models for for additional sprints.
suggestions?

The dodo would be a great sprint run. I would definately get at least one no matter what steel/handle combo is used (although colored G10 would be great) :D
+1
Thank you,

Another vote for a full flat ground Persian. :D Dare I add that full flat ground stainless damascus would be even better. :o :Dbh49 wrote:full size Persian with full flat ground blade and Ironwood handle

I don't recall seeing any estimated production figures here on the forums, but if I'm not mistaken, Sal stated that the production for this model would be left "open", and more could be ordered/produced by the distributor if sales were sufficient.fellyjr wrote:Moteng is the distributor the Black ZDP Caly Jr was made for and I heard there will be two runs of 600 a piece for a total of 1200 pieces produced.
That's better than only 1200 total. My info must have been a little off. :oPadawan wrote:I don't recall seeing any estimated production figures here on the forums, but if I'm not mistaken, Sal stated that the production for this model would be left "open", and more could be ordered/produced by the distributor if sales were sufficient.
