Corrosion Test gets *NASTY*.......

#1

Post by MacTech »

My Salts are starting to annoy me with their utter bulletproof durability and refusal to rust, so it's time to break out the heavy artillery.....

Rock Salt dilluted in water, and since i now have a spare ultrasonic fogger head, i'll put the scrap fogger in the tank, it'll be filled with salt fog, highly corrosive salt fog

darnit, i really shouldn't have re-homed that Native after all, oh well, stop off at wally-world and pick one up anyway, also stop off at a pet store and get a hygrometer.......

If you could get a hold of some Chlorine that would be the ultimate corrosion test. ;) But be carefull it's deadly.

R.I.P. poor little scrap fogger. You died for a higher cause.

That is just plain nasty!

From what I gather, you're using a Walmart Native. So, which is going to fail first, the knife, or the fogger?

I'm trying the Salt 1 first, i didn't feel like stopping at a pet shop or wally-world tonight, so i put the Salt in instead

the salinity of the water is quite high, so high in fact that it took a half hour for the fogger to get a usable amount of mist in the air, it usually fills the tank in seconds, 30 seconds to maximum fog density is normal

it *tastes* about twice as salty as seawater, seawater typicly measures out at 1.025% salinity, i'd hazard a guess the water in the chamber is at 1.055% or more

Wow your really going above and beyond on this one. I for one am really looking forward to the pics and watching the H-1 laugh at the attempt.

I think the blade will survive this. Not so sure about the coating on the other parts.

This problem probably isn't part of your world, but how about testing H-1's resistance to acid rain some time? I heard that stuff can get quite vicious.

after 24 hours in *SALT FOG* the Salt 1 is still unscathed and gleaming brightly in defiance of it's Hyper-Saline bath

if i had any doubts about H-1 before, the're gone now, it's withstanding *rock salt* fog, the same rock salt that can corrode holes in automotive sheet metal (yes, admittedly automotive steel isn't a fair comparison, but still....)

or even a auto dipping thinngy for a dunk tank
just thoughts

OT i got the knife and bottle opener back it was miss shiped and did you even get a real chance to use the OB knife it doesnt seem in that bad of shape

Pretty tough test, but is the knife a user?
If you really want to be evil, scratch the blade with a sharpmaker stone and repeat the test. That will be very realistic, since a user will inevitably get some scratches. Remember that a uniform steel surface of any kind will increase rust resistance.

I also like butch's automatic dipping thingy idea. :)

The Salt 1 *IS* a user, with a conveniently pre-scratched up blade, as far as a dipping chamber goes, the fog chamber is rather nasty and has that angle covered.....

the knife is laying on it's side in the fog, one side facing up, one down, the fog generally condenses on the top side and runs off the blade, coating the back side, when i take the knife out of the chamber, it's dripping wet and water actually runs off the blade

the previous incarnation of the fog chamber was much simpler, it was the tank, an aquarium bubblewall spraybar and an air pump, it created salt spray, the fog particles are finer and can work their way deeper into the knife crevices and such, also salt fog has a higher air/water ratio which is what causes rust

hmm, maybe what i *should* do is go to waly-world (*groan*, HATE wally-world!) and pick up a Native, rust it in the fog chamber, then take it out, dry and clean it, then set the chamber back up as a salt spray chamber and rust it again, see which one is quicker.....

Still no rust, and it's *VERY* salty in there.....

How salty, you ask?, well, take a look at the *OUTSIDE* of the fog chamber.....

Image

It's so salty that it's killed 5 of the 9 LED's in the fogger, and the actual *FOGGER* is starting to RUST!......

Any updates, MacTech?

Although I probably know how the H1 is holding up, how's the fogger going?

The fogger's still fine, amazingly enough, the Salt 1, as expected, is unscathed

i still have no idea of the salinity in the tank, but lets put it this way, i had to shut it down last night because the *AIR* was salty, i could take my green laser pointer and shine it against a dark surface, and even in a room lit by a 17" CRT computer monitor, the *BEAM* was clearly visible, there was a faint haze in the air

needless to say, for the safety of my computer hardware and home theatre, i stopped the test, no point in corrosion testing my *computers*, i *know* they won't fare well

hmmm.... maybe Spyderco should contract with Apple for the next incarnation of the MacBook Pro and Mac Pro, make the cases of H-1 steel ;)
