Delica II - stainless model - opinions?
Delica II - stainless model - opinions?
Hi, I know that many of you have already replied to me about the Delica II in my "Characteristics of AUS-6?" thread, but I thought I'd post this as a question about the model of knife, instead of one about the blade steel in case I missed the attention of some folks.
So...are there any opinions about the stainless Delica's that I haven't heard yet? I'm considering the plain edged version, to use mostly for light-duty tasks at work such as cutting up fruit, opening letters, etc.
Please pardon the (sort-of) duplication of this query.

Like I said it is still one of my favourites. Here are some reasons.
Despite me having big hands, the handle is very comfortable. Better than the Calypso Jnr which is in the same blade range, who's handle is just a bit too short for my likes.
Having a SS handle the knife has some of the weight of a bigger knife without actually being heavy. Some other knives in this range feal a bit too light. I like to feal I am holding something solid, and the SS Delica feals just right.
The SS handle means that the handles are a lot thinner than a FRN handle. It's about 3/4 the thickness of the Calypso Jnr (FRN) despite having the same blade thickness. This means the SS Delica slips nicely into a pocket.
The SS handle means that it is a quick draw from a pocket.
The SS handle gives it a classy look.
As a personal taste I find the I like the thinner wedge shape of the older Spyderco range (Delica), than the newer trend towards the leaf shape or thicker wedge of some of the newer designes. That said I now the new designs will grow on me
Despite AUS-6 not having quite as good an edge retention as some of the other steels, it still takes a wicked edge and is easy to maintain. For light use like you say AUS-6 should give you no problems.
The only other thing I will suggest is after getting the SS Delica plain edge, look to get the SS Harpy. The handles are very simular and make a very nice matching set
"Walk softly, but carry a big stick."

Hi Jeff,
The reasons this is my most carried knife:
(Not really in any order of importance)
"Corporate"/"gentleman" appearance of the whole thing - inc blade size, s/s scales, clean design
Size - not too unwieldy for use in public, big enough for any general duties I encounter.
Stainless scales - very smooth "draw" from IWB carry - also give it a solid heft and make the ideal weight for opening with a very slight wrist flick.
As a bit of a traditionalist in some ways, I appreciate it being the "classic", definitive Spyderco style - as Yog aluded to.
I also carry it more than any other knive due to the low riding nature it has as a result of the clip being mounted very close to end of the scale - sits perfectly , comfortably and discreetly IWB.
As mentioned in a recent thread - I'd consider this perfect if it were offered in combo edge.
Go ahead and get one - you'll love it.

Thanks, you two.
I appreciate the specific nature of your response, as it tells me that this knife will meet ALL of the requirements I have for such a tool.
I simply love the "glide" of a stainless handle in and out of the pocket or waistband, the heft of the s/s design, the classy look, the blade shape and size of this knife for it's intended purpose.
Some people freak when I draw my Police model and start to cut with it. Perhaps I'll carry both and decide which one to use in a given situation.
"To freak or not to freak, that is the question..."
Yog - I have been thinking about an s/s Harpy for some time now...thanks for the nudge.
Thanks again. Cheers, Jeff/1911.

According to Sal, the 50/50 bladed stainless Delica will be available in 2002. It will still use AUS-6.
Also, I'm going to put my acquisition of a Delica II on hold for now, as I'm just in the process of trading into a stainless steel, plain edged Rookie. This is actually the knife I was looking at before I began to consider the Delica II, but was having trouble finding one locally as it is now a discontinued product.
Hey, I've got an idea for yet another new thread...(Rookie vs Delica). Grin.

Jeff,
Glad to hear you like your Rookie II. I remember now discussing this knife with you awhile back...how quickly I forget.
I am more and more enamoured with the stainless Spydies as time goes on. My collection will grow in this direction faster than in any other, that's sure. Like you, I think I'd like to still buy a stainless Delica. I'm glad to hear you're planning this even though you already own the s/s Rookie. Helps me to legitimize my plan to do the same.
Cheers, Jeff/1911.
