would you give a stranger your spydie?
Dudes,
I've done plenty of field trips to the jungle and in most of my assignments, the wilderness guides whom I had the previlage to work with were bowled over by the beauty and extreme sharpness of my Spydies. Well, its customary in some parts of Malaysia for visitors to bring gifts, and I've actually parted with a few Spyderco knives. I'm glad that they are being put to good use because I've got plenty of faith on my Spydies. Whatabout you dudes out there : Have you ever given someone your spydie?

Samo,
Here in the American south there is a tradition that a knife is not given away. It must be "purchased", usually with the smallest coin the receiver has in his pocket. In that way the knife is not offended at being cast off and will give good service to the new "owner". I don't know where this came from and I don't know if it is practiced universally in the south or not.
I do know that my first knife was given to me when I was about five years old by my grandfather. I cut myself within a few minutes. Now it could have been that I was too young to have a knife. Or it could be that my grandfather was teaching me about the tradition the hard way. He is gone now and I guess I will never know.
But to answer your question, no I have not given any 'Spydercos' away yet.
My partner is going to work for an agency in another state and when he leaves I will give him a NIB G-10 Rookie that I have salted away.
"I just thought of something. What if this thing can read minds?" "He's gonna be real mad when he gets to me." THE THING

I'm planning on giving one or two new ones as Christmas presents, but I wouldn't give any of my personal ones away.
I need them, all of them, yes even that one over there, there mine I tell you, mine, cough cough ...
That said, if thay every bring out a SS Delica with either a VG-10 or 440V blade I do intend to pass on my old one to my nephew when he is old enough in a year or two. He is quite fascinated with it, and I feal that it will mean more if it is the one he has admired rather than a new one.
"Walk softly, but carry a big stick."

My fascination with Spyderco knives is such that I have been "looking" for friends and family to whom I could, in good conscience bestow a gift of Spyderco. So far, I haven't found anyone who seems to have the level of interest or respect for these fine products. I guess though, that much of this is acquired once one owns the knife...now isn't it?
I just don't want to give one that will be put in a drawer and forgotten.

I gave one away acccidentally. I left a serrated Endura on a table at work and this Bastard took it. It was the first good knife I'd ever owned and I'd carried it for years. ****, the serrations were half gone due to resharpening and the clip was broken off. I was looking forward to seeing how it performed as a plain edge! Unfortunately my place of buisness does not allow strip searches or severe beatings to be administered. I still see the SOB occasionally and I want to......maybe I shouldn't drink and post.
Well this has been cathartic. Now I'm just waiting for the VG-10 Endura to come out and all will be well again.

Glock Doc- I don't give knives away either.the only spydie that I have given away was a FRN Dragonfly that I gave to a coworker for 1.00.The only knives that I have ever given for no cash at all in return is the ones I've been getting my son for birthdays and xmas. I hope this does not count because they are new and unused.

I've given away a surprising amount of my knives over the years - most of them have not been Spydercos as I like to hang on to those ones! I did give a Spyderco Delica to the guide who saved the lives of myself and my girlfriend back in 1996 on a volcano in Nicaragua (LONG story). He was eyeballing it the whole time, so I figured it was the least I could do in light of the fact that he saved my neck...
I gave my wife a Delica this past Christmas and while her brother was watching our house this summer he sort of "borrowed" it. My wife demanded he give it back...so it looks like I will be buying him one this Christmas.
Otherwise, I am always looking for a good excuse to give away excellent knives and Spydercos fit the bill perfectly!

Howdy Samo,
I've given away a few Spydercos. The one I couldn't resist was a handicapped gentlemen who uses the clip to carry it on his boot...it was a NIB G-10 plain-edge Rookie and supposed to be my wife's birthday present. I'll have to find her something else unique before next year.
Take care,
stu

WOW! Interesting stories dudes!! Spyderco had inspired many wilderness guides here in my country.. I've given away a Moran Drop Point, Several Enduras, a couple of Spydercards, a Chinook to a longhouse Chief as a token, some neck sheaths and a Spydie hat which gave a guy a permanent smile..

I'm going to arrange to run into Sam the next time I'm in Malaysia! This'd be like visiting the Tower of London and coming home with a sword!
I'm going to give one to an ex-girlfriend for x-mas (Don-t worry, we're friends) She's been eyeing my Calypso for years.
Great stories!

I gave a Delica to 1 special friend & promptly had to get him another one as the first"grew legs"(Spydies seem to do that*G*).Got my sons the Q's.Knives are'warrior's gifts'in the Native American tradition:given to those embarking on a journey(spiritual or otherwise).I have given"trash"knives as gag gifts, but I'm always particular who I give a knife to.Most recently I gave 2 to a friend of mine who's adopted his wife's 2 grandsons:told him to salt'em away until the kids were of age.
