mrb, i called kenmax too and they told me that the 6P is more robust and i should only get the E2 if i'm a bodyguard or an undercover officer........so i think i'll be going with the 6P. They were pretty honest too....told me not to get another spare P60 bulb just yet as the original bulbs have been known to last 5-6 years. So what do you guys think? DId i make the right choice and are there any other recommended models for general usage and EDC?

Hullo Hy & Clint,

We locals seems to have taken control of this thread pretty well :-)

I'm a member of the Surefire forum - I've found it very useful, I've noticed you over there Clint.

Mate - the 6P is a great choice - I reckon for an extra $10 it's a good buy - you'll love it.

I've had mine for about 6 years - I've only had to replace the lamp once - it was quite early on and I was bit disappointed that it hadn't lasted too well - but the life of the current lamp makes me think the first one may have been a lemon, or I may have dropped it too hard etc.

In terms of accessories, I like the lanyard, especially when camping etc, I "share" one lanyard between my 3P & 6P, I don't have a pouch - havn't really had the need - not that is a good reason to not acquire another gadget :-).

I'd say you might as well get a spare bulb while you're ordering - IMHO it's good to have both a P60 & P61 unit.

I'm hoping to get an M2 and E1 next.

I agree!
Lanyards are very handy and although I use the low output lamp, the 120 lumen lamp is also useful.

Does Kenmax keep Surefires in stock ??
Or do they have to order from the U.S. hen needed??

Clint.

P.S. Im starting to get confused is this the surefire forum or the spyderco forum???
I might start raving about Spyderco on the Surefire site soon!

Hee hee!

Clint,
They said they had plenty of 6Ps in stock but the E2's would be arriving in about 2 weeks.

Kenmax seemed to keep reasonable stock of the common items - they had lamps, holsters etc in stock

G'day fellas,

I probably should ask this question on the Surefire forum but, since you seem to have a pretty good thread going here, I thought I'd join in .

My wife and I got a big fright a couple of nights back when we heard the front door slam at about 1 a.m. When we got up there was no one in the house but there was a shadowy figure outside the door. Turned out to be my eldest daughter (aged 10) who was sleep walking and had gone to look for her sister . Anyway it got me thinking, our house is pretty secure but what would I have done if there had really been an intruder. I think a Surefire would be a good start and I've been looking at the 6P and E2, but I need to be sure that they will temporarily blind a BG. What do you blokes reckon, is the E2 bright enough or should I go to the 6P with the brighter lamp?

BTW I only want it for security. I find a Photon is enough for EDC and I have Petzel Zoom headlight for camping and such.

Clay

Hi Clay,

We've sort of subverted this into a mini Australian Surefire forum - hope Sal & the crew don't mind ;-)

For your stated purpose - I would certainly be strongly recommending you go with one of the 6P/G2/D2/M2/Z2 range, with the high power bulb. These all use the same lamp unit P60/60 lumens or P61/120 Lumens.

There are 3 & 4 battery models as well - but these are pretty dear to buy and run. The 2 battery units would be fine IMHO.

There is talk of a high power lamp for the E2 - but who knows when - or even it's a certainty.

I am just using the standard P60 in my 6P and it's brighter than my 6C cell or 6D cell Maglite.

The high output bulb (AUD $44 from Kenmax) will put out enough light to seriously unsettle any BG.

If you're on a budget - the G2 is the Nitrolon (plastic) body option - same innards as the rest - will take the P61 lamp - Kenmax have these in stock for AUD $120 I think.

Hope this helps - this is what first convinced me to get a Surefire - the guy in the shop told me to close my eyes, and then shone the 6P in my eyes - it was a very powerful demo!

Thanks mrb, that sounds like good advice. I may settle for the G2 as it will make it easier to get the P61 lamp at the same time (also leave me more money for Spydies ). BTW have you been having trouble navigating the Surefire site. Every time I click on a link I get a window referring me to the Australian distributors, I had to take a very roundabout route to get any product information. Thanks again.

Take care,
Clay

Hi Clay,

I went to the site yesterday - and it looks like they might be doing some work - looked a lot worse than usual - lots of broken links, 404's etc - but it seems to back to normal now - actually a good site IMHO.

You can see/get the 2001 catalogue at:

http://www.uwgb.edu/nevermab/al/surefire.pdf

G2/P61 sounds like a great first Surefire Clay.

Clay,

There's lot's of good threads on the Surefire Forum, here's one that you might find relevant.

http://www.candlepowerforums.com/cgi-bi ... 1&t=000250

Most guys really like their E2's for EDC, so your requirements for nightstand use mean the G2 could be more relavant to your particular needs.

I've got a 6P on the way!!! Clay, since u're using it for emergencies, u might as well fork out an extra 40 bucks and get a more solid light...who knows, you could even whack an intruder over the head with it.....using mr janich's techniques....

Thanks Mark, I checked out that thread. Sounds like the E2 with the brighter lamp (if it happens) might be a good compromise between ease of carry and light output. I would also like to be able to use it for my own and my wife's personal safety. I might hang off for a while to see if the new lamp eventuates. OTOH the price of the G2 is very attractive .

Where abouts are you? I have a feeling from your web site that you're in Melbourne but if you happen to be in Sydney, Hy and I are planning to get together for a bit of knife talk and you might like to join us.

Take care,
Clay

Clay,

Go on, go for the G2 now - plenty of time to get an E2 as your 2nd unit for EDC etc :-)

I know you'll be happy with whichever unit you opt for.

You're right - I am in Melbourne - very rarely get to Sydney nowadays, lived there for a year or so in the mid eighties though.

If any of you L.E. types out there ever have a chance to go to Surefire Tactical Low-Light Instructor School- Do it!!

A good U.S. source for Surefire is www.botachtactical.com

This thread started me checking out our Australian prices.
Kenmax and Pacific Rim are the Australian wholesalers and importers under liscence to Surefire. No US company is allowed to export to Australia for fear of losing the brand.
Out of all the products we buy they are the only ones to be sold to the public at our cost price.

Our wholesale cost on the 6p is $163.90AUD incl GST.We sell it for $194.70AUD thats less than 20% markup.

Seems the prices are way more than US prices.
Remember if ordering a rechargeable then you need the 240volt plug pack.

My favorites to go with My Spyderco Endura are a Surefire 6Z Combat light in a Blade-Tech holder and a Kimber STS Carry Pro .45 acp.tom.
