Michael, what books do yourecommend for someone who wants to learn the basics of MBC but cant attend a courseas i live in Australia. Have you written any books on the topic yourself?

Dear Hy:

Thanks for your question.

I've written two MBC-related books. The first was "Knife Fighting: A Practical Course." It presents the basic concepts of the MBC system I teach, but unfortunately was written before I learned and developed the training drills that are now a critical part of the MBC curriculum. Nevertheless, it is a good overview of the combative elements of the system.

The second book was "Street Steel." It deals with the selection, carry, and deployment of personal defense knives and is probably the most complete reference on one-handed opening technqiues for folding knives in print. It doesn't teach tactics per se, but still covers an important, and often neglected, part of knife training.

Both of these books are published by Paladin Press, www.paladin-press.com.

Unfortunately, there is no book that covers the complete MBC curriculum as I teach it for Spyderco. Probably the best surrogate for hands-on MBC training is my video "Fighting Folders" and the soon-to-be-released two-tape sequel, "Advanced Fighting Folders." Together these videos present most of the content of MBC Levels 1 and 2 and pieces of Level 4. These are also available through Paladin.

I hope this answers your questions and hope I haven't offended anyone with the shameless plugging of my products on the forum.

hy,
The Janich books are pretty darn good. And I've viewed the videos Michael has. What I found was how much more I got out of the books & videos by taking an Janich MBC class. I know you're pretty far away but if you get a chance to train with Michael in person, it is MORE than worth it.

Mr. Janich,

When you speak of the 'sequel' Advanced Fighting Folders tape; does that infer that the frist video would be considered 'vol 1'?

Or more simply put... Do the yet to be released new tapes contain overlap information from the frist video tape?

BTW- when the author provides clear, concise, discriptions of the materials; I would'nt consider it plugging. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Dear John, Seth, and Hy:

Thank you all.

John, I appreciate your kind words regarding hands-on training. Since you have literally "been there, done that," you certainly know whereof you speak.

Seth, "Advanced Fighting Folders" literally picks up where "Fighting Folders" left off. I don't believe in rehashing the same material, so I specifically stated in my introduction to "Advanced" that viewers should review "Fighting Folders" before attempting anything on the "Advanced" tapes. Any references to the first tape are very brief and are designed to provide context only.

Also, thanks for letting me off the hook on the "plugging" thing.

Hy, if you order directly from the Paladin catalog in November, you can save some money through our Holiday discount. The "Advanced" tapes will be released in that edition of the catalog. We also offer discounts on materials ordered through our web site www.paladin-press.com.

Dear Hy:

In answer to your question, "Fighting Folders" and the November (actually probably late October) release "Advanced Fighting Folders" are as close as you will get to actually attending MBC training. "Fighting Folders" includes virtually all of the Level 1 and a portion of Level 2 MBC curriculum. "Advanced" covers the remainder of Level 2 and selected elements of Level 4. Since Level 3 is primarily reverse-grip tactics, I've left that as a separate topic for now. If "Advanced" does well, I hope to do another follow-up that will cover reverse-grip drills and tactics and hopefully the balance of the program.

Again, although these tapes are not an exact parallel to the MBC program, they do include the vast majority of the information. And, by ordering firectly from Paladin, you'll be added to the mailing list so you can stay abreast of new titles that would also be of interest to you.

It is possible that a dedicated series of MBC tapes will be produced in the future, but I don't believe in promising things I can't be sure of delivering. Also, especially in light of recent events, other specialized MBC programs are being considered, so the system is still evolving. For now, however, the referenced tapes are about as close as you can get.

I hope this answers your question. Thanks again to you and Seth for your interest.

Stay safe,

Mike and I have discussed the production of a series of tapes that follow the basics of the level 1, 2, etc. courses that are provided to the student upon completion of the course. Designed to help retain the course rather than replace the course.

The only drawback would be the same as Mike's earlier tapes, new developments as the "course" evolves. I think that can only be served with updated tapes (certainly not an impossible task).

The same will probably be true of Bram's tapes. These will need updates periodically as Bram evolves and refines the teaching methods, as well as learning new "tricks" involved with the Gunting.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Sal is correct on my tapes..
updates and revisions are the key word..
The old tapes arefine and will be available..
the new?
The Seminar Tapes.. a step by step series of what I actually teach @ seminars to elite LEO groups..minus some stuff thats ONLY for them..is in the works..complete with overhead views..
and a CD/DVD-ROM version...

There will be an instructors manual to go along with the tapes...

to all of you..you cannot go wrong by buying Mike's books or tapes..They are very up to date and contain a wealth of information!
and its like having Mike @ home with you!!!
now thats cool!

Thanks for all the help guys...I've placed an order for both of Michael's books. Are there any others that i could get further down the road to improve my knowledge? Bram, have you written any yourself? I want to get as many books as possible because i cant attend any on site seminars which are by far the best method of learning......

To All MBC Forumites:

As mentioned earlier in this thread, I have produced a two-tape video set that closely parallels the MBC Level 2 and Level 4 curricula. It is called "Advanced Fighting Folders." FYI, the first duplication run is complete and it is available through Paladin Press. Please check the web site www.paladin-press.com for details and ordering information. Thanks.
