All I can tell is that it's a G. Sakai blade. :p

G. Sakai Knife

#4

Post by spyderwa »

This is a knife that is produced at the G. Sakai factory in Seki City. I picked one up for between $20-30 US. It is a liner lock with a 440C blade. It is a very sharp knife with a metal handle like the SS Delicas. Not quite as tight or smooth as a Spyderco but very nice quality for the price. It comes in a blister pack with a small sharpening stone. Hope this helps.

Very interesting liner lock. The exact opposite of a Divid Boye dent. Mr. deacon should love that one ;)

I guess thats close enough. It is a knife from Japan. Picture is circa Spring 1992 from Knives Illustrated Volume 6 where it says,

"Spyderco is famous for its Clipits, but the firm also offers a variety of distinct Japanese folders by G. Sakai. Shown is the all stainless Kataba".

I thought it was interesting that it was offered by Spyderco. I wasn't aware of this until reading the article today.

Not likely, that's still a right handed lock ;)

Though I'm willing to bet that one would be pretty easy to unlock left handed :p

Thanks for the pic. There are some G Sakai models in the (earlier) Spyderco offer I really liked (like that clutch lock thing). I realize they are obsolete, but it's always nice to see them.

Steve, you need to download and peruse some of the older Spyderco catalogs Ted has made available in PDF format. Spdyerco acted as the American distributor for several Japanese makers who also were (and I believe still are) producing some of the Spyderco models which are made there. Sakai also produced some of Sal's designs that did not incorporate the round hole opener (like the clutch lock) under their own label. The G. Sakai website can be both very interesting and very frustrating, at least for folks like me who can't read Japanese.
