Holy cow is this knife sharp! I purchased a Calypso Jr. lightweight. I'm fairly new to the knife world, buying a couple of Benchmades this summer got me started and now I'm hooked. Now I can see what everyone has been saying about Spyderco being sharper out of the box than BM. But I wonder, can I keep this knife as sharp as it is now? I have a Lansky regular and diamond kit, and probably am going to get a Sharpmaker next week. How hard (or easy) will it be to keep this knife sharp?
Very easy with a Sharpmaker. I sell these and use them and so do most of my customers.
The new video and book that comes with the Sharpmaker makes it easy for anybody to use efficiently.
Congratulations on stepping up into the world of Spyderco owners.
Great Choice!! I have a few spydercos and the Calypso Jr. Lighweight (plain edge) is my favorite. I just purchased a Sharpmaker and it is quite easy to put a really sharp edge on this knife. (believe me, if I can do it, anyone can) The training video and book for the Sharpmaker are excellent as well.
Lear - You've earned your rites of passage into Spyderdom. Soon, the spydies in your pockets and drawer will multiply and you'll find yourself wanting more, hence : declaring yourself a spydernut. Welcome to the ring and keep them spydies sharp with the 204 dude! <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
Congratulations!!! Now that you got your first Spydie out of the way, and a great choice it is, may I suggest a Native for your next? You won't be disappointed. As for sharpeners, the Lansky will work just fine for now. I've never used a Sharpmaker, I prefer to do mine free hand. Have fun.
Just like you, I love my Calypso Jr. lightweight. I´ve sharpened it once and it was peacecake. Now it´s almost as sharp as a NIB knife and it´s sharp enough for me. I also use a 204 and find it easy to handle.
Paul,
I'm not too familiar with all the Spyderco knives, so I went to the website and looked up the Native you suggested, and I think I'll be adding that to my list of must haves. I really like the looks of it!
Thanks all,
lear
