Help me decide!!!!

#1

Post by dtp9 »

Hello all. After all the research I have decided on Spyderco as my first knife, but I need help in choosing which. If this helps I would like to have something that isn't bukly, one that is partially serrated( new for me) and that can be carried for everyday use. I know this is asking alot but I want to make sure I get a good fit for what I am paying for it. I am also traveling with it, what are the rules for traveling on planes for pocket knives. Thanks in advance. Vr

For a first knife I would look into the Native Lightweight or the Delica Lightweight. Both are very comfortable to carry and, in my opinion, perfect for everyday carry. As for partially serrated, both knives are available with that option, but the Delica is 50/50 while the Native is 35/65. You'll hear alot of talk about partially serrated versus fully serrated or plain edge, but it's pretty much based on personal experience. I think starting with partially serrated is a good choice, because you get to see how both edges work in real life. My first Spyderco was a 50/50 Delica Lightweight. I've carried various Spyderco knives ever since. As for traveling with a knife, I don't think there is any definitive answer on that one. I carried my Delica throughout Europe and didn't have any problems, but that was 1996 and (i'm sorry to say) the world has changed since then. Okay, I've got to stop now, my fingertips are starting to bleed. Good luck with the decision and I'm sure you'll get lots more input from the rest of the spydernuts on the forum.

Carson thank you very much, these were the exact ones I was looking at, but needed an experienced opinion. One thing I forgot to mention was that I am Left Handed does this have any bearing on the model I get?

Hi dtp9. Welcome to the forum. I'm going to try to put in a single post here. From appearances on this thread, that may be difficult.

I certainly would second the suggestion for the Native Ltwt. I really love mine. One potentially important thing tho -- I've read many threads where people attempted to carry knives with partial serrations onto airplanes, and were not allowed to.

Whether the Native or the Delica, I would always take along a self-addressed, stamped padded envelope, in case the airline doesn't let you on board with your knife.

You certainly would do better if any knives were in checked-in luggage. You might do better to even have your knife in your carry-on luggage, rather than in your pocket. I don't think you'd ever have any trouble at all with a plain edged Native. The Delica does have a look about it that many people associate with weapons.

FWIW, Spyderco developed one knife -- the Co-Pilot -- strictly for carry aboard airplanes. The design was specifically to allay the fears/suspicions of the rent-a-cops who check people into airline secured areas.

The mini-Dyad might work for you, with one serrated blade and another PE blade. It is so small that airline folk might not perceive it as a weapon at all. But, I believe you're going to be a lot better off with a PE bladed knife.

Both the Native and Delica have metal pocket clips that can be removed very easily. You can take the clip off and put it on the other side for left handed use in a minute or two.

I just got a plain edge Calypso Jr. and it is insane. The flat ground VG-10 blade is like a folding razor. It also fits my hand anyway I hold it. A little smaller then the Delica and Native, but so close that you wont see it. Picked it up for $55. Best knife value out there.

I have flown with my serrated Co-Pilot by using it as a money clip and putting it in the change basket with the clip up. I would think you could do the same with the Calypso Jr. or the Delica if you just fold the bills once. And the clip is reversable on the Delica.

Hi dtp9. Welcome to the forum <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>. I would suggest a Calypso Jr. Lightweight(FRN). The knife fits in your hand very well and VG-10 is rust resistant and will hold an edge very well. The Delica and Native are great knives too. If you get one of these, wait until they come out in VG10. Hope this helps.

Welcome aboard dtp9.
Many different answers to this question. If it was a partially serated blade I would go with the Delica BK as it is 50/50 whereas the Native LW is 65/35 which is a bit too much serations for me.

Don't discount a SS handle. Even though they are a touch heavier (who's really going to notice an extra 2oz), it is more slim lined. I have an SS Delica (4oz) and a Calypso Jnr LW (1.9oz), and to be honest because it is about 3mm wider I'm more aware of the Calypso in my pocket, especially if I have to reach in to get something.

Although my everyday preference is the SS Delica, if you are going to be around airports a lot I would go with the Calypso Jnr as the blade shape is a touch more sheeple friendly. It might not be partially serrated (a good point in my book), but it would make a great little travelling companion.
