Caly 3

I haven't been hanging around here as much as I used to (that's what happens when you have 3 computer literate kids :) ) so I may have missed this, if so I humbly apologise in advance. Anyway I found this post from Sal on BF and was so excited I just had to post it here.

The proto Caly 3 is the same as the UKPK,

Same pattern & size.
The same G-10 (USA).
Same ambi "deep pocket" wire clip (USA).

except for:

Steel which is VG-10.
A mid-lock back (with a boye dent, sorry Deacon).
Dual skeletonized full steel liners.
Jimping on the finger choil (which will be added to the UKPK in the future).
The scales are pinned, but the pivot is adjustale.
It will be made in Seki-City & USA.
It's a tiny bit thinner (about 1 mm).

The proto is a very nice EDC.

I'm normally not a big fan of G10 but this is one knife for which I'll gladly make an exception. I just can't wait.

I think it shouldnt be problem to change the G10 scales for something else.
Micarta, wood, carbon fiber..

I hope it will remain sleek and gentle, not "a la micro manix".
I want a sleek knife, not a folding prybar.

i love my caly jr, so i'm sure this would be fanstastic. Though i do like the wonder if i will like the extra weight.

A Caly Jr with a LITTLE more beef, that is an EDC from above. I love the Caly (VG10) with it's flat grind and razor like qualities. I carry this size knife more often than larger ones and having another can't be anything but great.

I have the UKPK. It is almost ideal for EDC. If you add a lock you have perfection. The low ride clip absolutely rocks.

No need to worry about me on this one Sal, it's not my cuppa on so many other levels that the Boye dent becomes a non-issue. Sorry Clay but aside from the jimping, there is nothing about this knife that I consider an improvement to the grey FRN Calypso Jr. in VG-10. I'm not a fan of G-10, I'm even less fond of the "chicken necked" look of the UKPK, and, while I generally remove clips, if I do decide to carry that way I strongly prefer tip down.

Now a "real" Calypso Jr. in VG-10 and FRN, sans Boye dent, sans semi-swedge grind on spine, with added jimping on ramp and choil, THAT would excite me, and a bolster and scales version done that way would be so exciting it might prove fatal. :D

I find it interesting how different everyones individual preference is. My Spyderco collection includes mainly G-10 scale models, with just a couple of FRN models. I won't buy a model with aluminum or especially steel scales. I am looking forward to making the Calypso 3 part of my collection especially in G-10. I love the feel, weight, durability, and grip of G-10. Although Lockbacks are my least favorite lock type, I will make an exception for this little gem coming our way. Plain Edge for sure.

I played with the CALY 3 for quite a while during the SHOT Show in Las Vegas. :D
It is everything the “Mini-Manix” was supposed to be, i.e. with a blade of less than 3 inches.
It is on top of my want list. Congratulations, Sal!

I thoroughly agree with you regarding G10. The last G10 knife I carried regularly was the blue Forum Native and the only other G10 knives I own are a Harpy and a Forum Military. However, the skeletonised liners and adjustable pivot are enough for me to forget how much I dislike G10 :) . I got used to tip-up with the Native and actually prefer it to tip-down, although that is the way in which all the knives I now carry are configured. Not sure what you mean by the "chicken necked" look of the UKPK but the thing I dislike most about the original Calypso is the pointed cusp at the end of the thumb ramp. It always seems to dig into my thumb and I can't wait to have a Caly without it.

BTW is there still going to be a bolstered version?

I expect that it would depend on the sales success of the G10 Caly III. Think of it as a market test. They want to do a bolstered version and ZDP, etc. But there has to be a market to support it.
